Athletics

The track, weather and altitude all make a huge difference and this isn't considered to be a fast track.
Yup. Add to that the fact that he didn't get as much rest time between the semis and the final as usual, so not getting a WR is no surprise. I think he could still run 9.6 or below if pushed hard, but as he still has 2 events to go I think he was happy to just do enough to win rather than pushing himself to the limit. I wouldn't be surprised though if his one regret was not pushing harder when he actually ran his 9.59 back in 2009, as I think he could've gone sub 9.5 if he'd ran flat out.

And what a run by Niekerk in the 400m. For the outside lane as well, that was just amazing, I didn't think I'd see that record broken for some time, but that was immense.

Quote from Martyn Rooney:

"43.03... Wow... He said he wanted to go 42 and nobody believed him... Wow! Congrats"

Damn you BBC push notifications

Oh well.. caught the replay this morning and it looked like he struggled getting off the blocks then hit the vtec kicked in!

Thing is, Bolt created a world record of 9.58 in 2009, then a new olympic record of 9.63 in 2012, but just now, no new record and 9.80. So he's well past his best and 4 years from now, who knows. This way, he goes out on a high, unbeaten.

+0.2 sec is 'well past it'? :o

As said, he wasn't off the blocks too well. This was a potential WR run if he did.

It's amazing just how quick Bolt actually is. He was a bit further behind that usual by the halfway point of the race. In the time it took my brain to process this, and then to get a little worried, he'd already shifted gear and gone ahead. His mid-race acceleration is something phenomenal. I thought Carl Lewis and Linford Christie were great for that but Bolt isn't just on another level, he's in a completely different galaxy to them.

Well, in 100m sprint at this level, +0.2 is quite a long time. :p But yep very good point. I was a bit hasty to degrade his current fitness. Yes I suppose he could still do 9.6X with a better launch from the blocks.

Love to see him move fully to 200m and 400m - probably be less strenuous on him at his age and his starts would matter less...

ps3ud0

He seemed to be suggesting that next season he might try to take on Van Niekerk at 300m. That could be an interesting race although generally when there's an event that splits the distance one or other of the stars will stuff it up or get injured.

Well done again to Bolt - did enough to win again and I'm hoping he manages the treble treble.

Was listening to Michael Johnson at the weekend descrbing how running 400m flat out is impossible, but he never actually said the maximum distance he was ever able to run flat out

Im guessing from the above its ~250m or so?

(Im assuming the 200m are flat out like the 100m?)

Looking at the WR for the 200m, it seems flat out. It's basically double the 100m time. So full pelt all the way.

Bronze for GB's Sophie Hitchon in the women's hammer throw and she threw a PB in the last round to get it. You can't ask for more than that.

I wasn't really watching that seriously, but then around 3.45am I noticed it was getting intense in the men's pole vault final. Fantastic drama, straight out of hollywood!

Frenchman Lavillenie, with a cocky smile on his face thought he had gold after his 5:98m clearance, and that he'd beaten brazilian da Silva. He then went for 6:03 to assure his position knowing that the brazilian was still after gold. But Lavillenie didn't clear the 6:03 and had one attempt left.

Then da Silva, who hadn't made Lavillenie's 5:98 went to find a different pole to also try for 6:03m with just two attempts left. Failed but then amazingly cleared it on his last attempt to manic applause by the home crowd. A new OR and the first Brazilian track and field medal. Lavillenie had one more attempt, tried for 6:09 but failed. He was in complete disbelief!

There will be a movie made about that pole vault competition just watch. Was great drama and an unbelievable stunning win for the home nation.

Lavillenie was gutted.
