ATI 3850 - chipset problems?

Hello there,

I'd like to give my older socket 939 AGP system a boost by upgrading to a 3850.

My motherboard uses the VIA K8T800 Pro chipset and I'm sure that I read somewhere previously that ATI cards had problems running on boards with VIA chipsets.

I'd be grateful if anyone could give some advice before I part with my hard earned pennies.

Thanks :)

There has been quite a long running issue with AGP cards with ati, supposedly on VIA chipsets.

In the main release drivers, there is a good chance that it may not work properly, however, ati have recently been releasing hotfix drivers to solve the problem

omega drivers also work great.

The problem you're thinking of concerns PCI-E 2.0 backwards compatibility.

Most motherboards with older VIA chipsets aren't compatible with the latest cards as they can't run PCI-E 2.0 cards out of the box. As the card you're interested in is an AGP card, the PCI-E compatibility issue shouldn't apply in your case I'd have thought.

Have you checked your motherboards site and checked if the AGP 3850 is in a list of tested GPU's for your board? If not, it might be worth checking.
