ATI 3870 vs nVidia 8800GT Comparison Table

If the 8800gt were in stock anywhere they'd get the sales, they can perform all they want, but nobody can get one at the moment

lol, frankly, ocuk pricing sucks, they can be had for £140 and £105 for the two models, a 3850 with 512mb mem(they've been reviewed, they are coming soon in quantity) will be around the £120 mark. i'm sorry but 20-40% slower in nvidia games, MUCH closer in non nvidia bought games and 40% cheaper for honestly, good performance in everything except crysis, which lets be honest the GT sucks in too. the gt isn't going to let you play on massively high settings and great framerate. the best bet for crysis is sli/crossfire. frankly 2x8800gt is £330-340, 2x 3850 with 512mb mem will be £240, in some games they will perform very close in other games the GT will have a fairly large lead, but the ati cards will still be more than playable in again everything except crysis at max max settings. but thats one game, its unlikely we'll see another for 6 months or more thats as hard on graphics cards.

also, low end = the £15-50 market, mid end = £50-100, and high end equals £100+, ati has been ahead on on both low and mid end for some time, high end ati will almost certainly ship more units than nvidia. their core is half the size, and the 256mb bandwidth on these cards, which lots are hitting 2.5Ghz, is getting to 8800gtx bandwidth numbers. anyone who wants budget performance will get an ati card, anyone that wants fantastic performance will buy 2x ati cards. i mean 2x3850's with 256mb will be £210, £40 more than the gt and will be quite a bit faster in basically every single game.

pricing, die size are what the fight is for this refresh and ati won easily.

also trying to work out, did the crysis 64bit run fine on nvidia cards straight off, on a the way its meant to be played title, like ATi managed to do? no you say :o

nvidia still can't get 64bit 8800 drivers working correctly, STILL. ati had one from release, nvidia still don't have a completely stable driver a year later. how many beta's has nvidia released to get crysis running right. their driver team is a complete joke.

its at its very worst 40% slower than the GT< and at worst 40% cheaper.

its at best 5% slower than than the GT and at best still 40% cheaper.

I think its a great achievement by ATI. They were out of the race on all fronts, but now they have caught up in the sectors which count (GTX / XTX price brackets didnt give much of their overall revenue).
You are right that most of the money is made on the midrange and budget aprts but the top end is a very good marketing tool to get the word out how great the midrange product is, ATI misses that now by being incompetent and unable to build a top end part due to the inefficiency of their die.

if you were right, what you are saying would be true. But think about it, you are contrasting lowest price ATI vs the highest possible price Nividia... the 8800GT's are as overpriced as the 3870's so when the 3870's go down in price, so will the GT's.. so at least be fair and compare them both at their natural prices.

256MB 8800GT £122 inc
512MB 8800GT £150-£160 inc

as for 64 bit, i am on Vista 64 bit, installed the 169.09's from nvidia and all games fire up fine, inc Company of Heroes DX10....

soo that kinda makes your point(s) moot...

You do know that DrunkenMaster owns both ATI and Nvidia (2900XT/PRO and 8800GTX/GTS) I can't remember exactly but he has a better leg to stand on in your debate with owning both unless you too own both cards?. Most probably not though so I'd say your argument is kind of, well "moot" :p :D.

What has owning cards got to do with the pricing of said cards? He is playing a game, highballing one price (8800GT) and low balling another (3750). either you highroll them both, or lowroll em both, otherwise the validity of the result becomes moot, i hope you can understand that?

Depends on your rig i guess i got 4x120mm fans and 2x80m in mine so i got plenty of air in and air out and as i already stated my temps not gone up and the gpu temp is sitting at 42c idle.

Not everybody wants a leafblower for a computer.

My system has 5x noctua 120mms... amazing fans... the only thing I can hear are the hard drives.

If you say you can't hear your 8800gt when gaming - you're either deaf or the rest of your system is making too much noise.

I like my system to be inaudible.... and it's as close as it can be.

I'm hoping 8800gt after-market coolers come out soon... although I think I read the accelero s1 fits it?

Look at the 2900 GT vs. 3850. That doesn't even make any sense. More shaders, more clock speed, more bandwidth means the 3850 should be pasting the 2900 GT.

Well im not deaf, and my GT is as quiet as my GTS was, its only loud on switch on for about 3-4 seconds, so who gives a rats about that, ive got 2x silent case fans running half speed, and ive got a freezer 7 pro running half speed, and everyone knows those are quiet, and still underload i can not hear my GT, if i increase my case fans speeds then i can hear them, but GT is silent apart from at switch on. :p

I'm sorry but the GT is silent.

FFS, where the hell does this info come from, the bloody GT is silent at stock fan speeds and i have mine set at 40% and i still cant hear it over my case fans.

It comes from people who always buy ATI cards so are trying to find an excuse to stick with what they are used to without admitting they are an ATI fanboi. It happens one way or another when ever both companies release new cards
