My gut feeling is that the 6870 will be marginally faster than the 480, but that'll be it.
After a whole year, I really can't see that happening. It'd be incredibly stupid of them to do so. The 480 is already marginally faster than the 5870 anyway.
Marginally faster than a 480 is 5890 territory.
The 6*** series is just a stop gap measure till Northern Islands (the proper follow up) is released next year, that's where (hopefully) we'll see the big performance improvements. After a whole year, I really can't see that happening. The only card that will outperform the 5970 will be the 6970, that much is pretty much a certainty. Will any of the 6 series out perform the 5970 then? Surely they have to by a bit or the entire '6' is a bit silly.
What do you think then?

The 4870X2 is comparable to the 5870 in terms off performance so if you follow the same pattern for the next series shouldn't it be at the same level (or slightly under) as the 5970? Of course it all depends on how far they can improve on the 5xxx cards as they're using the same 40nm I believe?

well the 6870 is to the 5870 what the GTX 285 is to the GTX 280 minus the die shrink
so it shouldn't really provide that much a performance increase
Where'd you get that stupid idea lol?
pretty much is, most notable thing their changing is 5 shaders per SIMD to 4 shaders per SIMD and the NI uncore
not really a huge update at all
