Hi

I am looking to buy a gfx card and have been looking at the gigabyte 6990 but wanted to know how loud are the 6990 at idle in general? I don't really mind the sound when playing game or startup, but more interested in the sound at idle or if planing a youtube video .

thanks in advance

Id say the stock 6950 cooler was not only unbearably loud at load speed but also pretty noisy at idle. Still what's quiet for some is noisy for others.

Very quiet idle, but OH MY GOD its loud under load.

Well over my threshold which is why its going under water.

thanks for all the replies everyone,

If i was to watch a DVD would this cause the gfx fan profile to switch to 2D load profile, ie loud?

Basically I dont want noise when watching DVD or programming but anything else I could not care mutch

thanks everyone

when u watch a movie the clocks go to 500/1250 1.00v (UVD) so it's in between the 2d and 3d clocks . at UVD the temp should get to 50-51c which means the fan only spin up 2-5% higher than idle = still quiet..

it's all to do with the temp. lower the temp = lower fan noise

If you can go dual card I wouldn't suggest either the 6990 or the GTX590. The 6990 is far too loud and doesn't overclock very much. The GTX590 has to be throttled to prevent it blowing up (so I wouldn't overclock anyways) and although reports conflict, certain sites are saying that Nvidia don't intend to revise it, just relying on the driver workaround (ie downclock) to stop it dying.

Have you thought of maybe two 6950s/GTX570s? Same/better performance & more overclocking headroom for cheaper.

If you have to go for one, the 6990 is slightly faster than the 590 (a few percentage points), won't blow up and is a lot cheaper.

it overclocks very well tbh.

mine does 950mhz on the core on stock voltage....

has for noise, i understand everybody has different levels of whats loud, but it's no louder than a 6950/6970 which most people think they are not to loud.

Nice OC mate, I based my assumption on the launch reviews where they were limited to around 880-900 on their overclocks.
