ATI Catalyst 9.2 Driver: Performance Express-Test

Far Cry 2 started stuttering after the update in DX9 on my 4870. A quick look at option and dropping the AF from max to X2 solved the problem. What does AF do anyway?

I think you're muddled up there - you'll have dropped your AA, not AF.

AA is Anti-Aliasing - it removes jagged polygon edges by eeither sampling a higher number of pixels, or by using a custom edge blurring filter.

AF is Anisotropic Filtering - it improves texture quality, most noticeably on distant or angled polygons.

Wiki will tell you more :)

Nope it was defo AF i lowered.

Actually now im doubting myself xD, ill confirm when I get home but im pretty certain it was AF

The performance difference between 2x and 16x AF on a 4870 will be negligable.

The performance difference between 2xAA and max AA in FarCry2 will be fairrly huge.

9.2 completely buggered my system stability. I have no heat issues as I have a HR-03 Rev.A strapped to it.

World in Conflict crashed minutes after playing. Even Furmark wont go above 2 mins before freezing.

Tried a complete uninstall with driver cleaner and still had issues so went back to 9.1. No problems after rolling back. Also saw no difference in FPS on games I play (If I was lucky to benchmark before it crashed):(

5% increase on World In Conflict, my arse!!!

a lot of people hated Crysis. But if you can play it 'as inteneded' (good fps, high/max settings) on DELTA difficulty its a very good game. a lot of stealth moments, lots of planning attacks with great results. Yes its not perfect, they spent 70% making the engine & the rest making the game.

can report back, it was AF i lowered. From the icon in the bottom right cornor I selected Radeon HD4870 > 3D setting > Anisotrophic filtering and changed it from x16 to x4. The AA in the menu has always been @ X2 and only goes up to X8 anyway. Ill run FC2 Again with AF it set back up to x16 and see if the stuttering occurs again.

Edit: put the AF back up to X16 and things are running ok. Think it must have been a one off ad just coincidence that it hapened after installing the new drivers.

How many people are getting dull colours after updating to 9.2?

I didn't notice anything, but now I'm getting paranoid ... I mean, is it a major difference or very subtle? Whats causing it? This is on XP 32bit btw.

Why are ATI still advertising the 8.12 hotfix drivers on the download page for 9.2? Do the fixes in 8.12 hotfix not exist in 9.2?

My second core on my 4870X2 runs slightly hotter than my 1st.

Only like 3-4 degrees though.

Silly drivers

Of course it does. Nothing to do with the drivers. My second core runs about 20C hotter...as would most peoples. If you have air cooling, one core will receive warmer air than the other.

My second core is also constantly in 3d mode... 750/900, while the other is at 507/500
