ATI experiences of running Fallout 3

4870x2 here at 1900x1200 maxed, no issue like that here. Only problem I have is the game freezing every now an then, but this seems to be a known bug on the bethesda forums.

Try reinstalling the game, ati 8.11's and directx.

I'm finding that it run's slightly choppy once i get out into big open spaces, maybe down to 20-25 fps at some points, by no means smooth as butter! When i'm in smaller area's i get a constant 60fps

What fps are people getting in the large open spaces?

Running C2D 6420 @ 3400ghz
ATI 4780
1920x1200 lcd

Thanks for the replies. At least Farcry 2 runs sweet as now, though I'd rather Fallout3 would run a little better. Most of the time it runs well but I guess it must be cpu hungry. It did help a bit by raising my q6600 to 3.0 but I am hesitant to try and raise it higher, too inexperienced also. Consequently I've had to lower the res :( Another important point is that when I first installed it I had a 512mb 4870, it detected my system @ ultra, now with an x2 it auto detected it as medium lol ??

E5200 @ 3.4 Ghz
4850 @ stock
1680x1050, 2xAA, 10xAF, high everything else, Vsync on.

Smoof as silk.

Mine is silky smooth after turning off the vsync for this game via fallout.ini file, it's in your save game folder in "my documents\my games", and change the setting iPresentinterval=1 to iPresentinterval=0.

i also used this...maks quite a bit of difference

That would suggest a driver issue. Did you fully uninstall the catalyst drivers and driver clean after swapping out the 4870 for the 4870X2?

If not then try this - uninstall, driver clean and then restart. Once restarted let windows install its own driver then restart again.

Once you're back into windows install the most recent catalyst drivers and restart when prompted - should run as it was intended to after that.

Finally, are there any hotfixes/patches that relate to the problem that you haven't added? Wouldn't normally ask but i've not been up on ATi drivers recently since moving to the 260.

4870x2, 1920 res, all maxxed out and runs between 60 and 80 fps. Except for the drop in framerate caused by the 'memory leak' which it has been rightly or wrongly termed. Alt-tabbing to the desktop and then going back in brings the framerate back up.

Must admit, I did not uninstall the 4870 drivers first since I thought that they were exactly the same drivers. So I booted the system and found out that I needed to install the ones supplied, did so, all was fine though I did notice that the 8.11 update I had installed for the 4870 512 was still there though the x2 one is the same driver. Anyway, I deleted that and just to be on the safe side I downloaded it from tyhe source again.
Oh! Question : I download my drivers from somewhere other than amd/ati - is that ok?It's been fine in the past. Don't know if I'm allowed to say the name so I won't ;)
