ATI First Again.

I don't doubt people get this impression and I've never denied that I favor nVidia somewhat over ATI. However for some reason people seem to equate it to being a rabid nVidia fanboy out to attack ATI at every turn... which even a simple search will show to be untrue.

Where does the impression of you come from do you think ?

Anyhow... ATI being first to get DX11 support... is like being first to turn up FOR the race - people only remember who won.

So wake me up when its all over.

The only people who have been first to anything thats actually been used in a few titles of late is nVidia with physx and even that hasn't taken off like it should - and when I say taken off like it should I'm referring to hardware physics, not physx.

I rest my case.

I am not technical enough to go into any depth on the whole who did what with dx10 so i won't and save myself looking a prat :). As far as image quality goes i am not sure anyone with either make of card can categorically state theirs is better because it is such a subjective issue and what is good for one person might be bad for another.

I really don't think any of these points is worth getting worked up over or for launching any attacks on either company. I was miffed by the whole assassins creed patch episode and that has seriously coloured me a little negative towards nvidia but not to the point i will constantly argue it.

+1

Rroff thats where people get their impression of you right here in this quote "The only people who have been first to anything thats actually been used in a few titles of late is nVidia with physx and even that hasn't taken off like it should - and when I say taken off like it should I'm referring to hardware physics, not physx.".

Your saying what ati has maybe done with being first to have dx11 is nothing and then saying nvidia are first with something really usefull that is that usefull it is hardly noticed. You have to see how that comes across from a neutral viewpoint which i try and maintain on these forums though it is damn hard sometimes and even then i get accused of being a fanboy.

Being honest these gfx card forums on OcUK are a joke sometimes there is no chnce of a reasonable rational debate on anything gfx related any thread that might have something to offer just degenerates into a flame war between both sets of fanboys. Neither side look half as good as they think in fact they look like and sound very often like a bunch of stupid kids with no life.

For the vast majority of us all that matters is performance for price and who makes the best top end cards is something for a small percentage of people that come here. I personally couldn't care less who makes the best card for my money as long as it is the best i can get for whatever budget i have to use at the time. Maybe if people kept that in mind a bit more these forums would be as useful as they first appear.

DX11 is not even out yet, you can probably bet ATi will be first to utilize it in a game...

ATi was first with DX10.1, it shows performance gains in Assassins Creed but NV got it took out.

On balance tho...

nVidia were first to hardware physics and its used in a number of mainstream titles even if the effects are for the most part incidental... it does also help to smooth up performance in a number of titles that do use physx tho.

nVidia were the first to support SM3 - which again under pins quite a few titles of late - and many games had to put in legacy paths to support ATI hardware at the time or to support older ATI hardware due to the lack of it.

ATI were first to the table with tessellation... which oh I can't even remember a title that uses it - I know there was one but its completely forgettable...

ATI were first to the table with DX10.1 which is used in about 2 titles and doesn't really have much effect other than giving ATI a small performance boost to help them keep level with nVidia... developer just really aren't interested enough in DX10 features let alone DX10.1 at this time.

ATI were the first with decent texture compression... but it was only when nVidia adopted support for S3TC/DDS that developers started to really implement it - granted ATI's efforts in this area are still somewhat superior. I know you can force it on even in unsupported titles but thats another story.*

Please correct me if theres any ground breaking first I've forgotten to mention.

* Ooops actually it was S3 that really made this first :D

Keep level with Nvidia? Well tbh I don't think that is true, it's just another fanboy statement, in the top end of ATi's cards price brackets the performance compared with NV cards in the same price bracket is pretty much on par or for some people better.

No developers are not interested enough in DX10 features that's why lots of games use DX10...

Theres a few games using DX10 granted - tho for the most part its tacked on incidental effects much like physx... crysis/fc2, stalker, cryostasis do make a bit more use of it - but the game still looks very close to the DX9 render path version. Tho full on DX10 SSAO and the liquid shaders in stalker:cs do look very nice, shame the game itself kinda sucks.

Sucks that developers aren't implementing sun ray effects on older APIs - you can fake it up pretty convincingly and at a reasonable enough speed on DX7 even using the first couple of stages of the method for depth-fail shadows and then mis-using the volumes by flipping the normals and applying an additive texture pass.

ill take your word for it, since you could have just said "do it by depth blah blah blah blah" and id be able to udnerstand just as much :)

I'd be interested to know if people think im a fanboy or fairly neutral. But then again I have admitted im a bit of a fanboy, but thats cause i like the best card, so i do switch, and i recommened everyone else the best bang for buck card at the time.

Obviously the DX10 method has way better performance as its done on the GPU and the other method requires building volumes on the CPU (if your not already using a shadow volume system then it pretty much halves your framerate) - but it always annoys me developers don't think outside the box a little and implement little touches like this on older APIs that make the games look so much better - if your already using shadows volumes tho the performance hit is somewhat absorbed.

There's a large difference between favouring one company and being a fanboy.

I expect everyone on this board favours one company over the other, it's natural as we all form opinions on what we've bought and owned.

However I feel the line is crossed when people start inanely arguing their side at every opportunity.
