ATI's R600 is on track for Q4

Im really finding it hard to understand some peoples points on this thread... with new graphics cards.... price brackets are always going to be very similar, so the choices are:
1) faster card / more memory
2) faster card / more memory + new features

Why would anyone go for the first option? Yeah nvidia brought the SM3.0 stuff when there were hardly any games, but the software developers are NEVER going to take the step first; hardware always needs to support the features before the software comes out.

Not sure what some people have against progression. Last time i checked the computing industry was veryyyyyyyyy backward compatable and thus no one should be forced to upgrade. Games are only just starting to have a min requirement of a DX9 card.

I dunno - not happy if your not moaning :}

@Loads: You gotta start looking at things from different angles.... the majority of people are NOT upgrading from top end to top end.... most people buy top end, get their moneys worth (ie skip a gen or two) and buy top end again. Thus the X850/6800 people -> R600 will be a perfect buy. No one is going to buy the R600 purely for DX10 games. Bigger picture dude.

At last, i know thats what ive been saying (or more like ive been trying to say), but there may be ppl who want the R600 just for DX10, and ive been saying if thats the case then seen as you can't use that yet, and thats all you want, then just get the faster refreshed DX10 card that will no doubt be coming out around the same time as the DX10 (skip the R600), your missing nothing are you. :)

people are making a big deal of the DX10 feature cos its an a new thing. do ford advertise their cars with "omg it has 4 wheels AND doors!111"... Marketting key -> focus on features that are new and the users are unlikely to have... thus upgrade :p

Anywho - just wanted to point that across. sometimes u come across as very anti-progression. just remember, you ultimatly control when you upgrade, so dont fret when new stuff comes out :)

Im not anti-progrssion though, im just useless at getting things across what im trying to say, especially in type. :)

Then we will get the variants of DX10 i.e DX10a, b, c etc thus bringing out more cards which have the extra features! I wont be jumping straight on the bandwagon espeically when my system will run anything okay for the next 12 months probally - just like all the people jumping right on the Conroe bandwagon when they dont even need it yet! :)

It's like anything though, do you cash in on your system now while you get a good price etc, graphics cards loose value so quick it sometimes makes me think is it actually worth upgrading them more regularly to compensate longterm price loss. . . . . ??

I think what most of you are missing here is the fact that they are on track for the end of the year / start of next year when vista was gonna come out before it got delayed again so really its not there fault there on time and Microsoft isn't.

Oh and yes there will be games able to use the DX10 but no DX10 around to use Crysis I believe they said out by end of the year even if vista isn't out

Totally agree! I'm an x850xt owner and will be looking to this generation of cards for my next upgrade! :cool:

Roll on release date! :D

I might have one of these to upgrade my SIS Mirage onboard graphics. :p It should go nicely with my forthcoming conroe setup.
