ATi's R600 Tech demo (pics)

What are people getting all jumpy about?

ATl would be the laughing stock if this card does not clean the floor with the 8800 line how much longer have they had to develop it? lol

And why are people still dragging DX10 into it?
There will be no fully fledged DX10 games out when the R600 is launched. ( They will be DX9 games with a few extra eye candy for Dx10)
Again people will be paying top notch for DX9 performance knowing the fact that their card is also DX10

And I agree Ruby is a hotie

well the video is 100x better :O

Good find thanks - but again - the nature demos in the 3DMark series are far superior in terms of showing off features, for the most part it looks like something from a few years back. The final couple of seconds gives a tiny glimpse of hope - that smile, with the rendering on the mouth and the wrinkle actually looks good - why on earth the decided to make her face look like it's molded from hardened plastic in the rest of the clip is beyond me? (The lifeless hair is another prime example - cards current cards can do much better than that!)

If they really want to show off their card they need to team up with proper game makers and showcase their tech together - rolling demos of Crysis/FSX/Alen Wade(sp?) would be a far better add than 3 minutes of poor quality, low res, in house tinkering - really don't understand their marketing on this one

I can't see what looks so amazing in those pics, if that was a pc game we would all be saying how basic the gfx look.

I got a 8800gtx too but i wouldn't think of getting rid of it yet, maybe 6 months time ill upgrade again but i can't see the point even when R600 is out.

Loved the little cheeky smile at the end, be nice to see a better quality vid though, but it looked pretty good. :)

EDIT: The R600 CeBit slides, scroll down for them here :)

I sat here clicking through the links to images. What did i think? Erm, who messed up Alyx from HL2? Man, those images look like that FarCry cartoon rendering mode.

And considering the extra time they had to work on the R600, i'd be surprised if it does wipe the floor. I'm not an ATi person myself, i prefer NVidia. And tbh, the NVidia demo does look better than this "when they made her they broke the mould" wannabe. More like "when they were making her, they smashed the mould half way through".

I guess we'll really just have to see how it all pans out. It's not really gonna be the Red vs Green struggle anymore is it, more like Green vs erm....who?

I love how everyone is saying this tech demo looks poor even though: -

a.) They've only seen it compressed, and at 320x240.
b.) It looks just like the G80 tech demo so far, no more/less advanced.
c.) They're comparing it to games like Crysis, when it's a bloody tech demo not a game.

I stand by what I said. If you wanted to show off your latest clothing creation you'd hire a model - not the fugly tea-boy who happened to be kicking around when it was finished ;)

Tech demos is the way they've done it since before the FX/9700 days?

By the way, you said "low res" in-house tinkering. You don't honestly think this 320x200 video is it, do you?

Have you never seen any of the tech demos for other cards or something?

-Even in the dodgy video clip you can see that the rendering isn't really showing off the cards ability - the hair is lifeless, the skin is flat and plasticy - it's the detail that makes the quality, and that is lacking. (For example, remember the facial mapping demo that came out with HL2 - spooky guy welcoming you back - that was showing off...)

Some of the earlier Tech demos were actually pretty good (I liked the original Ruby videos and the 'Fat Tech Guy' was funny!) But this one doesn't show off the card well - They would be far better off teaming up with proper games coders and really letting the card shine!

If you want to see games on these cards then all you need to do is look on review sites that compare image quality, or buy one and play a game on it.

These tech demos are to show what the card is capable of, not what the games will look like on it. The tech demos are more of an interactive CGI movie than a game, nothing to do with games at all as half the time they use technology not used in any games at the time.

Then email ATI and Nvidia with your request for tech demos from proper developers if you care that much.

Like I said, email them if you really care that much.

Personally some of us prefer to play games on them than watch rolling tech demos, they're just for pre-release.

So you think the Tech Demo linked here does a better job of selling R600 than a rolling demo collage of Crysis/FSX/Graw2 etc...?
The tech demos aren't about selling it though, benchmarks and adverts on websites do that.

These are just about showing off polygones and vertices, and dripping water etc.

Not to mention the costs involved with licensing from all these companies you mention for a short video.

Everything ATi does is about selling cards (they are not a charity ;) )

I agree they should be showing off "polygones and vertices, and dripping water etc..." But this demo simply doesn't do that (apart from the last second which really is rather good)

Advertising costs. But not advertising costs more - ask Coke - they ran a trial in the States years ago and the results were frightening! - ATi(AMD) have the money to show off their products properly - I can't see the commercial sense in producing a shody demo for something as important as CeBit - the world really is watching! (And if you don't believe this demo has a negative impact on the card's image, just read back over this forum!)

the question is when do the 65nm parts come out, because ive heard they wont be out right away and it will be 80nm to come first.. so it could be another month or more before we even see the cooler & lower power cards?

anyways im still waiting for this, im sure its gonna be great with all that extra memory bandwidth for DX10 titles.
