Atkins diet?

Diets only work if you stick to them. Otherwise you yoyo. Having said that, atkins is certainly more enjoyable than others, if you don't like carbs that is.

Plus it's really expensive to follow.

Energy out > energy in = weight loss. Personally, I'd work on the energy out more. And that's coming from a guy who's tried to lose weight every way possible. Pick a healthy diet (that you don't 'have' to suffer with) and exercise.

My parents went on it and its very good for losing weight quickly for the 1st week or two. After that it slows down dramatically. However they found it very hard and expensive to stick to, and makes you feel very tired and you cant poo!

Edit - Your breath will also reek.

Ok, IT DOES WORK!

But there are couple of point you should know

1) Only use it for short term weight loss, not as a permimant change in life-style

2) Only stick to proper meat with the fat taken off (Steaks and chicken with skin off), don't do what my brother did and believe he can gorge on bacon and sauages and still lose weight, he gained a couple of stone. prat

EDIT - as said before it can be expensive as meat is costly. but unlike other people mentioned i actually was full of energy as i was going to the gym and all the protien was a god-send to my body

2 is an obvious (you'd think) misconception about atkins.

As is the first, and the post above. Initial weight loss, like almost ALL diets, is due to glycogen usage and water loss. So, use it for short term weight loss argument is a joke. As that weight will go RIGHT back on when you come off the 'diet'. It's not fat loss that quickly.

Why are you starting it :/

Why not just exercise more and eat a balanced diet...

want to lose weight sharpish as my mrs has done lots of diets and they takeforever plus i have asthma was born with it unfortnatly so Gym and exercise is hard for me without getting out of breath

Swimming, if you can manage that, is a fantastic form of exercise. And you'd be surprised what hill walking (slowly) can do for you.

Don't expect miracles. You'll lose a fair bit to begin with but it will sloooooow right down after a few weeks. Your breath will stink of keytones. When you stop it and go back to eating normally the weight will pile back on and you'll probably be heavier than what you were.

Why don't you just cut out sweets/fizzy juice/ reduce everything in moderation and do exercise rather than trying an extreme method which won't help much in the long run?

I have asthma and smoke (yes I'm stupid!) but I can still do exercise without being too much out of breath! Using that as an excuse is fairly lame. :(

EDIT: Tefal (below) says some very wise words. My diet a day used to consist of chewing gum, apples and diet coke and I lost a fair amount of weight that way. I wouldn't do it now but it's quite a satisfying way to lose weight!

Just stop eating.

People say this doesn't work etc etc, omg your body goes into starvation mode and all that ***. Ever seen an anorexic? works for them.

not if you stick to it.

That happens with any large weightloss

It's better just to change your diet and life style.
Simple things like walking to work if you can.
Eating properly. stick to 3 or 6 meals a day, which ever suits you and calorie watch without being anal about it.

Things like stir frys and salads are great as you can eat huge portions and still have low calories.

An entire pack of family size stir fry a bottle of sauce and a pouch of straight to wok noodles, comes in at around 600 calories and is a large portion.

Meh, like most people have said atkins is good for losing weight, but you won't keep it off if you go back to eating carbs after it... Just try and cut down on bad carbs, fatty meat, crisps and chocolate... I'm doing that at the moment and certain excercises in the evening and ive lost half a stone in just over a week. My mate told me all about this, he's lost 3 stone and is keeping it off with just a good healthy diet. He sent me his meal plans, baring in mind all the whey is because he's trying to tone up a bit whilst doing it.

Stick to that, and you'll notice wieght loss, especially if you do some excercise at the same time.

my beer chiller is the first thing to go being loaned out to the old man for a while lol
ive already ordered the atkins book so will give it a shot for a month see how i get on.
i know its a expensive diet as meat is the main source of food when doing this diet but the money i save in beer and takeaways will pay for the diet.

dogma, my asthma is pretty bad when i start running etc so its not a lame excuse especially when youve ended up in hospital a few times due to having a asthma attacks

I'd suggest, if you're going to, do it longer than a month. As you disproportionally lose weight in the first few weeks of any diet.

im planning on dieting longer than i month, just want to test the atkins and see how i get on as its a extreme diet and many ppl stop after a few weeks due to feeling ill.

and be prepared to stick to what ever you choose, it's not going to be quick. A pound of fat is roughly 3500 calories. And they say an average person needs 2000-2500 a day to maintain there weight. The maths don't add up for super quick weightloss.

Also only way your self once a week,

i get on as its a extreme diet and many ppl stop after a few weeks due to feeling ill.

chances are any diet you take you will feel ill in the first few weeks. Due to blood sugar levels and your body adapting. Prepare to sleep all evening and all night for 7-14days after that you should return to normal.
