Audi A1

This is also a factor though as the Audi A1 has far better (in terms of performance etc) engines available to it.

However it seems to command a higher insurance group/costs, the fastest A1 does 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds...the same as the new Polo GTI (as far as I know). :o

Yep, you know why? Because its the same 1.4 twin charged engine that is used in the fabia VRS, Ibiza Cupra and Polo GTI. Strange enough they all use the DSG transmission aswell with no manual option.

Exactly the same!

And is the Fabia VRS or Ibiza Cupra the same price as a Polo GTI for example?

No don't think so, so deal with it. Its like any car class. A3 is expensive, Golf is cheaper, Fiat is bottom barrel cheaper. As for value for money, I would say if anything, the Audi would be better as it should hold value better - if what gibbo said is anything to go by. :)

No, but you're paying for the badge and a little more "executive" exterior/interior design for each successive brand increase.

Skoda < Seat < VW < Audi.

That doesn't make the cars any less similar, just means that people are willing (daft?) enough to pay the premium for a different badge.

Not just a different badge though is it?

When looking for a car we looked at the a3, golf and leon all with the same/similar engine. The a3 seemed longer and had a larger boot than the golf, but a little smaller inside the cabin, also insurance was too high. The leon had a good sized cabin and boot but had a God awful interior. The golf was had a suitable (but smaller) boot, high quality interior and felt more comfortable to drive than the leon.

Seeing as I see the interior 100% of the time im travelling with the car, the trim is rather important. A car isnt just about the engine, transmition, suspension etc etc, if that were the case, anyone considering a VAG car would only consider a skoda.... also no one would be too bothered about maintaining the appearance of their car, after all mucky bumpers, dusty, swirled paintwork and steel wheels dont effect the performance of the car!

So everyone agrees that an A1 is awesome???

Innocuous first post in thread causes standard Motors heated argument.

My work here is done gentlemen! ;)

And to whoever it was who said about The BMW 1 series, yes, pretty much every marque is on the list. And I will definitely test drive one. And if it meets my criteria in my previous post it will be on the list!
