Audi A4

How new?

The 1.8T is a solid engine, just make sure the coil packs have been replaced under the recall, the car's history documentation should have a letter from Audi about it.

I'm fairly sure the coil packs will have needed replacing then although it should be covered in the car's documentation.

Another thing to note is that the cambelt change interval was changed from Audi's recommendation at the time after they started breaking. I forget what the suggested interval is now, 75,000miles springs to mind but you'd need to double check that.

Whether it's your first or sixtieth car is pretty irrevelent in my eyes :). The 1.8T is fairly pokey, but the weight of the A4 will hold it back a bit so you won't have earth moving power available.

How much are looking to spend out of interest?

Im looking to spend 1-2k MAX on a Audi estate and not sure if they offer a good deal for the dosh?

My bro had a 100 then a 200 Quattro for years and years and was always reliable at high miles so hoping that follows on to the slightly newer smaller Audi estates?

Try and go for the 2001 onwards model if you can - the older A4's are getting on a bit now but still cost rather a lot of money for what is a rather dated car.

It's a stupid first car but I can't be bothered wage war against the people who think that even a Ferrari F40 as your first car is just fine 'as long as your sensible' :p

v good cars.
i've got /had an A4 avant 110tdi for over five years now, it's been a top car (1997 'P) i wouldn't think twice about recomending them.

they can clonk at the front, known fault, if it does it needs arms. other than that nowt, same with any car just make sure it's good when you buy it, it'll go for ever from then.

It's stupid because it isn't fuel economic?

My 1.8T A3 is perfectly 'economic'. I get 40MPG from it on a cruise and 30-35 around town. OK it's a bit lighter than an A4 but the A4 won't be a 9MPG wagon.

It's stupid becuase it's a reasonably potent car and a new, inexperienced driver*

*Discount my opinion if he's one of those who has been driving ages but just hasnt got around to getting himself a car.

The 1.8T (150bhp) is pretty quick, but the A4 doesnt exactly encourage you to drive like an idiot so its a reasonable first car.

Ah, thought you meant first car as in "my first car is an Audi A4, I have an Elise for the weekends."

That'll teach me to skim read threads...

I've got a 1.8T engined Passat and I get 31mpg to a tank, that's 100 miles per day, 80 of which are on the motorway....!

Around town it can be shocking but it's not the engine to buy if you want good economy!

Agreed.

My missus' Golf GTi uses more fuel than my 3.5 liter V6 SUV.

bare in mind the a4 1.8T of this time is thirsty and not actually that quick....it has lower bhp/torque per tonne than a 2L mondeo mk2 :o

Tom.

Yeh they are a good car but its a bit of a daft choice for a first car. You wana get something with 1.4 engine or under. Give it a few years till your insurance goes down then sell/part-x your ruined heap for something better.
