Audi owners in here!

Thanks naefeart. Tyres are 5mm on the front and 6.5mm on the back so should last me a while. (I do about 8 - 10k a year)

It's not from an Audi dealer but last service was August, and MOT was last month. I've spoken to the original dealer about the car as they've done all the servicing and they've said all was good with the car. No recalls, nothing major on servicing and only failed it's first MOT because of tyre wear.

Hiya,

Am going to soon be a first time Audi owner. My Dad recently passed away so I'm using some of my inheritance to by myself a nice car. Well, it'll be nice by my standards! So, out goes the 1.8 Vectra and in comes an A6 2.0 TDI Ultra Black edition with SLine trim. 2016 model with 37k on the clock.

Can't wait! Although my main concern will be ride comfort as it sits on 20" alloys with 255/35 boots. I have 7 days though to decide if I like it. Well, more like if the wife and kids like it!

Anything I should be looking out for? Dealer is doing the timing belt and water pump before they deliver the car.

Mechanically, A6's are really strong. Electrically they can be a NIGHTMARE. Do not buy one with a sunroof. Every car that I'm aware of with a sunroof, the sunroof started to leak. And that's not hyperbole, it's a fact. They just leak. And they're £400 for a lubrication service every 2 years.

If it's an s-tronic make sure that's had the oil changed when required. And a full service history obviously. The tyres are not cheap so make sure they all match and that they're in good condition.

Make sure the Sat Nav is up-to-date and that the radio traffic licence is activated for at least 12 months. If it's not then you'll need to pay Audi for the traffic updates on the Sat Nav.

Make sure the screen slides out of the dash smoothly. They can be horribly jerky.

Check every electric toy works. The buttons fail. And they're crazy expensive to repair with new parts although there are loads of used parts on eBay.

Check the MMI controller centre wheel. It should click when it rotates and it should click when it presses down. I had to have two replaced under warranty because the button went soft and non-clicky. And it's absolutely vital that that controller works properly.

100% get a good warranty. Ideally an Audi warranty that covers all the electronics because anything on the interior of these cars is £1000 to fix. And most modules are component protected so you need a dealer to unlock the module so you can recode it when you change it.

Count the keys. If you look on the MMI it shows how many keys are registered to the car. The keys are the physical key that slides out of the plastic button carrier. The little black circle is the immobiliser chip. The number of keys on the MMI should match the number of physical keys you receive. It's normally two. There can be a third key in a plastic card thing in the glovebox but I think that was mainly pre-facelift cars. I think all the Ultra's were facelifts - you can tell by the headlamps and DRLs. A facelift S-line will have LED headlamps (excellent). A pre-facelift will have Xenon headlamps (actually better headlamps but £400 to replace the bulb or ballast when they fail).

The only other thing that failed regularly on mine was the fuel flap release. Not the cable or the electronics but the actual little black bit that rotates into the cover to keep it in place. These fail A LOT. not crazy expensive to repair (about £180 incl. the labour) but REALLY irksome when you roll into the petrol station and you press the cover and it doesn't open. That's REALLY irksome, I promise you! I had four replaced under warranty across 4 cars and the last A6 allroad I had had one fail the second time in the fourth year of ownership so I had to pay for it. It just levers open with a plastic trim tool, but who has a trim tool in the car usually? So maybe buy a trim tool for the glovebox?

Anything I should be looking out for?

A different A6. The Ultra was aimed at the company car market and offers the private buyer little other than tedious noise and clattery unrefined ambience that doesn't fit an otherwise nice car.

Unless you do a particularly high mileage, go for a petrol one instead. If you do the miles, look for a 6 cylinder diesel.

A nice Audi A6 is a great car.

I had a LOT of A6's and they were all 6-cylinder diesels and all of those engines (even the much-maligned 204PS version) were lovely things. It is a heavy car and the fuel economy sweet-spot was always the 245 or 272PS diesel with the 190PS only really doing well on CO2 emissions for tax reasons. One last thing - if it's had it's adBlue update then it's quite likely it will DRINK adBlue. They started off doing about 8500 miles between adBlue top-ups and after the 2019 adBlue update there were reports of cars doing as little as 4000 miles on a tankful of adBlue.

See how you feel and remember there are LOTS of A6's out there if this one isn't right for you.

Indeed, there are lots to choose from, so don’t limit yourself unnecessarily.

I have to say, a four pot, manual diesel combo is probably more suited at an A4 class of car, rather than A6.

The A6s are nicer inside and the materials are better, shame to mate that with a small Diesel engine and manual box. It will be better than a Vectra, but pretty much everything else is too.

Just chopped my 7.5 Golf R in for a 2018 TT RS. Looking forward to an extra 90hp, less weight and that 5 banger soundtrack (it has the Sports Exhaust as well).

Sports exhaust on, pull the leaver back into sport mode and have fun :p

Just make sure you do all the pre flight safety checks before flooring it, like making sure nobody within half a mile is going to change lane or pull out on you.....the thing can seriously move, and then some!

There ain't much on the road quicker than a TT-RS

The most fun I had was with a sports bike :D he was surprised

It does, but pulling back into sport makes the gear changes very agressive and the exhaust pops and bangs a lot more

Hmm mine does this as soon as it goes into dynamic mode. Pulling the gear-lever back now puts the gearbox back into ‘D’ mode (its in ‘S’ mode prior). I though all Audis with drive select were all the same

I need to have a fiddle with individual mode, I find the gearbox a bit snatchy is S mode.

Interested to know a little more about how the DSG/S-Tronic behaves in the RS4 (or in general). Watched an great video from an engineering perspective as I've noted some strange shifts. My uneducated guess is that it can be down to it second guessing my next change incorrectly - hopefully not too much concern and auto seems to be just fine generally.

However the main area of concern I have is in manual mode for example:

Cruising at 3k RPM in D6 with a light touch on the accelerator, even coasting.
Downshift and pressing the accelerator at the same time causes a notable hesitation/slow down before then accelerating away.
If I downshift, then accelerate, it appears fine.
If I accelerate, then downshift, it appears fine.

The issue appears when I do them together - is that just the nature of the gearbox, or something a little more sinister?

Couple of other niggles, but thankfully has warranty and should be sorted.

Edit: here’s the video https://youtu.be/mj1Vk7SE-TI

Could be a software update, but it certainly does sound right and isn’t the behaviour I noticed in my last S-Tronic car.

Im currently debating putting some HRE forged rims on my 6. I really like the 540C 3-piece style but I’m wondering if it’ll be a bother down the road re maintenance.

Will see what Audi say, got a few things for them to look at so will add it to the list.

I like the wheels, I think your 6 is Daytona Grey? Would look really nice, but perhaps suit a lowered car more?

If the car has an Audi warranty, then definitely keep on at them until they sort everything 100%. Be interested to hear what they report back. You should get some pic up too!

Yes, Daytona. You might be right re a lowered car, I’ve thought this in the past. However I’d like to think my car looks ok stance-wise already? I’m certainly not keen on it being lower, the roads here can be rough and I’m on air anyway...
