Well I have had the car for around 22 months now and thought I should add an update for anyone interested. In that time I have added 21,000 miles to the car, which though far from big mileage is a lot for such a car and still leaves most of my friends who run sports/super/hyper cars scratching their heads as if I have a screw loose. I have always been the same, I drive my cars and enjoy them and will never understand owning to simply own rather than owning to use. It also helps that I don't live in That London, so getting in and fining great roads takes minutes, not an hour.
The car is currently in my Audi dealer of (current) choice having an annual service. It wasn't due for another 5,000 miles, but my preference is to have the car serviced every 12 months so to the day that is what I did. I also asked them to change the brake fluid again as a preference rather than a necessity. Other small things were rear spoiler was not seating as it should (fixed), a hose had come down from behind the front grill/number plate due to not being fitted correctly when I had the grills replaced (fixed) and I also asked them to check out a whine I was getting from the car and the geo.
Well I got a call this week telling me in simple terms "it needs a new gearbox", great....
Luckily I have an Audi Extended Warranty and after a couple of hours with the dealer, warranty company and Audi UK debating who would do what I got a call that my cost would be £100, the excess on my policy. Audi UK would pay for a brand new gearbox and the warranty company would pick up the cost of the labour. This is good news as the cost of the box and labour is £20,000! They do not rebuild, it is a brand new transmission from the factory on a 21 day back order so will collect the car and then arrange a new date for it to be fixed. Frankly it is ludicrous that a gearbox I can not really influence should fail in 24.5K miles and from reading it seems (summation) that there is an issue with the early 2013 DCT boxes that has now been fixed, which might be why Audi stepped in to pay, but as I say that is pure speculation on my behalf. Frankly I am just pleased they are putting it right at their cost and this is what the question "should I renew the warranty this year" on cars like this is ALWAYS yes.
I have had issues with this car, it has been far more temperamental than I thought it would be. Most of the issues are small niggles, they stop me doing nothing but annoy me. Suspension knocking, transmission whine, diff noises (a trait of the Quattro and exactly the same in my RS4) and things like noises from the wheels needing a special Audi £150+ grease again not impacting all cars and not paid for by me, Having said all that for the money it is a fantastic car that nothing in the same price range can compete with. I know how quick it is, I know how well it performs and I know that it's performance is 100% super car even if to many because of the badge it isn't.
I have driven the new model 3 times now, I still think mine is better, more alive, more visceral and not that much slower in real world if at call. New one is superb, but is lacking something and the assisted steering is garbage in my humble option. The engine is one of the worlds great road car engines and nothing in any McLaren or Porsche (outside a CGT) can compete for 'event'. Will see how this year goes and if I keep it, swap it for something different or just sell it. If anyone has 75K in their pocket to spend on something special go find a late Mk1 Plus and have a go.
The service + brake fluid?
£584
Cheap that for such a car I feel.
