Audi RS5

The GTR is impressive, but its attraction is only performance. I have a performance car.

This is something more practical. Just been reading about the Panamera gearshift and there is talk of it being changed. Trouble is when you spec a Panamera 4S it's easy to tip over £100K. The RS5 fully loaded is more like £75K.

Have you been out in a GTR? Because they are much more impressive than you would have thought inside.

Big as well

I completely agree with what you saying as well how a GTR will embarras an RS5 on any stretch of road with ease.
You're missing the point. I don't care about that. There's always something faster. I care about having a 4WD car that's well made, comfortable, sporty enough to have fun and practical. I think the GTR is a fine performance car, but it's thirsty as hell, needs frequent servicing and for me just doesn't have the class of the Audi. All of this said in the context of my other cars.

S3 - great fun hot hatch
599 - incredible performance, handling, presence and sense of occasion

I'm looking for a car that slots inbetween these two that is comfortable and has reasonable luggage carrying ability. For example in winter it would have to take my Thule roof box for skis. Can't see that working on a GTR.

The GTR is not the cheapest thing to run, services are every 6 months / 6000 miles and is not that cheap with an official HPC. Yes they do drink the fuel for sure. They go through brake rotars rather quickly and similar on pads, plus tyres don't last too long either, so yeah its not the cheapest thing to run.

I'd imagine the RS5 is something like every 10,000-15,000 for services and probably average 5-6MPG more. :)
It will still be very capable and sound plus look very good at the same time. :)

given that brief you already own the answer.

a Q7.
Not quite. The Q7 isn't really sporty enough in the mountains. It's a very big, heavy car that isn't great fun to throw round hairpins. Otherwise a very fine car.

So like a Q7, but a bit more sportier.

The obvious answer to this then is the new RS6. But as you say its not out yet.

Would you not consider the new supercharged S4 ?

The S4 is nice, but isn't it in the shadow of the RS5?

Got any reliable info on the new S8? Pics, specs etc.

Just the rumour mill I'm afraid, although many seem agreed on the engine being the same as the one in the RS6, so I expect it is safe to say the figures will be similar.

Other rumours say it will be a bi-turbo V8 producing 450Bhp.

I doubt it will be anything less than 500bhp myself, given the class it is in.

If I hear or see anything more concrete I'll post it up

I really like the RS5, shame the other half wouldn't let me.......yet!

It's been answered a few times but he doesn't live in the UK, where he does live has a lot of snow so anything other than 4WD would mean the car isn't much use for massive parts of the year.

GTR is the superior car.

However, it lacks the X-factor of the Audi and 'the image.'

RS5 seems the sensible option, given someone who already has a car which is relatively infallible.

We're also forgetting the GTR regrettably has a 'boy racer' stigma which is an acquired taste, in the same sense potential Focus RS buyers may be repelled.
