Audi warranty denial....

Disagree massively. Keyless entry and start is amazing.

But what was the burning problem that it solved? Was clicking a remote fob to unlock and using a jey to start the car so much effort? So much so that the (apparent) massive reduction in security is worth it?

Car key, manufacturer fob, front door key, office door key, desk drawer key, 2x allotment padlocks all on one set

The one time I took my house key off my car keys I then went to buy a new car, on getting home I realised the house key was inside, had to pay a locksmith to open my front door. Never again.

My favourite is gesture tailgate. Its amazingly useful when carrying two bags, a large box etc.

I'd hardly describe it as amazing.

I've got a car that needs a key for entry but is keyless start and one that's fully keyless.
I don't really have a preference either way though for our usage the keyed entry is better.

Keyless for instance locks when you walk away which is rubbish if you're wanting it to stay unlocked.

Not all do, some require you to touch the door handle, as I found out when I thought this and just walked away from my new (at the time) car and it didnt lock, which I found out 10 minutes later when I got back to the car.

I like my current setup, press button on fob to lock/unlock and then just a button in the car to start it.

any updates ? op was wondering how it was going?

No nothing as of yet.

RAC have replied and are taking it seriously it seems. They are awaiting a report from the recovery agent which is bound to say 'we didn't do it'...

That's my preference as well.
The Mazda has a button on the door handle to unlock but locks when you walk away.

Total pain in the backside I bet.

Well I would certainly prefer to have the car back and was initially thinking about going and getting the vehicle recovered to another garage to have it assessed. This would have then presented other issues because the RAC could then say 'well its not where it was before it left and other things could have happened, etc'. At least this way it has been with Audi the whole time and only the recovery agent and Audi have seen the car. I think going forward this was the best I could have done within the circumstances...

This was Auowatches response when I emailed them as well....

Hi ***,

I am really sorry to hear about the ridiculous stance Audi have taken when you are supposed to be a valued Audi customer. We unfortunately do not have an Audi approval or any car manufacturers approvals for that matter but the system is E Mark approved. The Ghost admittedly uses the actual Audi CAN codes to prevent the vehicle from being driven until the valid “Push Sequence” is entered but that would NEVER cause fuses to blow or damage the vehicle in any way. If the installer had made a bad installation there would have been problems from day one when you got the car back. If you put the Ghost system into Service Mode, it is as though the Ghost is not there and they can do whatever checks they need to. I assume you know how to do this and that it was in Service mode when it went to the Dealership. As mentioned, we only use the Audi software CAN codes in our Ghost software and we do not Re-Map or permanently change any of the Audi software settings, so if a Ghost is disconnected, the vehicles’ software settings are the same as it was before the Ghost was ever installed.

I hope you are able to resolve this matter.

Regards

There does seem to be lots of issues quoted with these all over Google. Many questions about warranties and the words "shouldn't impact your warranty" but shouldn't is not really confidence inspiring.

Probably a very much expected response from them. They'll never admit their device could cause any sorts of problems as it would make them liable for very expensive repairs. Which would end their business.

It's quite interesting that they don't have approval from 'any' car manufacturer. To me that would almost demonstrate that they've likely tried to partner with various manufacturers but they've all taken a look at the device and gone nooopee.

I agree... and I understand why they wouldn't approve it. Is it likely a CAN code will change during a software update? It isn't an unequivocal no, and I don't understand it fully but I imagine a dodgy code or 'dropped frame' given it uses ethernet could be disastrous if that instructs the starter to stay perpetually on or some other freakish unknown behaviour...

The fact the linked video of it in operation in the BMW makes it sounds like it bins off the fuel pump to stop the engine versus a 'graceful' shutdown further adds to my worry!

All conjecture but I guess this is why Audi wouldn't be too open about signing off a random third party device.

We need PSD2/Open Banking APIs but for Canbus!

"We unfortunately do not have an Audi approval or any car manufacturers approvals for that matter but the system is E Mark approved. "

This has really annoyed me for some reason, even though I expected them to say it.

The OP should not have to pay a big bill, or lose his warranty through no fault of his own. He bought the ghost in good faith. You could argue this till the cows come home, but it's not right.

There should be disclaimers saying the device could invalidate your warranty to help protect customers. Not everyone is clued up on such matters. Again, you could argue people should research, research, research.....but has the world really gone so far as to say 'it's everyman for himself'.

Question.....who is actually helping the OP? Sounds like he's fighting this by himself.

I'm really unsure where I stand on this.

I guess it's like buying a prebuilt PC, then fitting your own graphics card. Does that invalidate the warranty?

Maybe it's time to get the social media sites involved? Maybe too late for the OP, but could help others.

As Mercenary Keyboard Warrior said manufacturers would almost certainly not authorise something like this as it is just one more thing which might cause issues for them which has little benefit to them to authorise.

It is annoying how little car manufacturers work to a larger standard in respect to stuff like this - it definitely should be mandated IMO as amongst other things in a larger context can help to reduce waste and hence less impact on the environment, etc.
