Nevermind, I derped. Testing it now :)

Edit: Nope crackling is still there. I'm lost now, what the hell do I do?

Problem is I don't have a PSU to "borrow" I'd have to buy a new 1 of them too, and there's no guarantee that would fix it either.

Also just tried new cables for my PSU to my GPU and a new plug from the PSU to the socket, problem is still there.

Also like to add, I've taken it out from the Optical and I'm using it as a USB device, the problem is still there even while using it as USB.
So my options now are either change PSU and test, or ....?

So after all this time I was finally fed up and asked a fellow OcUK'er to record himself doing the exact same thing as me, and shock horror, although it's not as audible, the crackling is there on his system too. Not sure why mine is a lot more noticeable than his (Possibly the amp on the Xonar) but yeah, I guess many people don't notice it at all.

Problem solved I guess, it's an issue with the game, only taken me a few weeks to realise. Pro.

I think I want to cry.

Are you sure it isn't a problem with the DG?

Do you have SPDIF connection on your motherboard you can try? See if the crackling is present or not with L4D2.

It's still there using optical from the DG?

Have you tried USB?

Edit: Didn't read your last few posts.

I tried with USB. Still there. It's there when someone else recorded too though, and they confirmed they could hear it as well, even though their crackling was minimal.

So you get this crackling noise, with every audio, not just L4D2/games?

You said you think it's a problem with the game. That implies, you don't the problem when listening to music, etc.

Edit: Has the possibility of a faulty DG been considered at all?

Edit II: Actually scratch that. It can't be the DG, as USB is providing the same result.

I am, I think that REAPERUK is on to something though, it may be what he was saying.

I went upstairs and discovered that my 2nd surge protector has a seperate earth light on it (Didn't realise), picked it up and bought it downstairs to plug it in since I remembered he said it could be an earthing issue, and low and behold, the earth light isn't on, it was on when plugged in upstairs. So it could be an earthing issue causing my crackling audio after-all, which means no matter what I plug my PC in to, whether it's an external DAC or sound card I'll always get the crackle. Not sure really where I can go from here regardless. But it's pretty funny that, that was probably the cause after all of this. I just assumed the light on my old surge protector was indicating surge and earth, which it wasn't.

get your self a Socket Tester you can get them from B&Q ect you just plug them in also some do more than others depends on what you want to spend, but theses will confirm earth issues ect just Google Socket tester you will see the different types and what they do:).
also upstairs and downstairs are on different ring mains just like the lights, depends on how old the house and type though even wired. go for the socket tester anyway they are very handy just to have.

if they do show a fault then next step is an electrician if all sockets read a fault, if only the odd socket then i would change the socket and there only around £1-6 depending on make , B&Q own are not bad compared to M&K as i have used them doing a bit of DIY myself.

Aiight, will do! Thanks for the help.
If not, I may see if I can make some space upstairs to get my PC there and test it out.

Will it be done per plug, or would the whole socket be unearthed if 1 of the 2 plugs were?

use that tester on every plug, if one is ok and then the other is not then it is ether a faulty plug or the earth ect needs reconnecting to the plug i.e cut/strip the wires, but if you go that far just change the socket for what it costs , it is just not worth it theses days.

Just took my surge protector out and plugged it in in the kitchen, and the earth light popped on. Looks like it's just this room which doesn't have earthing (Tested all the sockets). So tomorrow I'm going to see if I can find an extension lead and lead a wire from the kitchen to this room and plug the surge protector in and get an earthed connection. Hopefully this should fix the issue.

Not sure what could have knocked the earth out.

Have you checked the latency of the card at the time the crackles occur?

Have you got HD(or HDMI) Audio on your graphics card still enabled/installed as this can cause conflicts even though not being used.

I feel your pain. :(

Has to be something in the PC then. What rotten luck you are getting. :(

I'm pretty sure that the double amping isn't helping, since with my DG I can't by-pass it, it could even be a problem with the DG's amp which is causing the issue to be worsened. So I'll probably get a new sound card since in some instances the sound crackle was better when running the DAC USB, just didn't solve it completely.

Funny thing I tried earlier actually, turning the game volume down and turning the amp volume up actually made the crackle a hell of a lot less obvious.
I'm also considering another set-up by which I get rid of DH totally and try running something wireless to see if that helps. Not sure how I'd set that up though.

Generally speaking my latency idles between 80-100µs, when playing audio it goes up to 120µs-200µs, with the absolute maximum being about 800µs which only spikes maybe once.

I tried disabling HD audio, didn't work.

It can't be anything to do with the DG, itself. If it were, the USB DAC, would be fine.

Double amplifying wouldn't help, no, but with the gain set to 0dB, the signal should be line out. Just as it would be from any other sound card, without a headphone amp. That's only going to apply, if you use the analogue out though.

Does you motherboard have SPDIF? I'm guessing you have tried that if it does.
