Bought an Asus P5K-E MOBO and a new CPU, memory etc. Put the beast together but not getting any audio. The drivers are ok in Vista and I can see media player playing tunes etc...I also cannot get my headphones to work via the front I/O panel on my case. If I got the connections wrong on the MOBO would this disable to speaker sound aswell as headphone ones. I've followed the ASUS manual but I must have done something wrong??? There is an HD audio piccie and Legacy Audio piccie. I followed the Legacy one. I've plugged the lime green cable into the lime green socket at the back but still no sound. If I disconnect all connections from the MOBO then should I get external sound via speakers no matter what ?? Please help.

Just noticed in device manager that the sound driver is Soundmax Integrated Digital HD audio if that helps??

Wll I don't have that mobo but have you after that tried to do the 'hd audio piccie' way as you have the driver as an hd audio ?

I got same mobo and had the same problem. Right click on sound icon in sys tray, click sounds then hit the playback tab, then (I hit SPDIF Interface), click properties then supported forms and untick some of the sample rates/encoded formats and click "test" - my sound suddenly started working, and when I put the sample rates back on it still worked for me :S Very strange.

Strange thing happened. I rebooted and it works now. If I choose AC97 legacy audio in the BIOS it works and if I choose HD Audio then it works. The confusion is what should I be using? I've got a 2 speaker + sub setup and use my headphones too when I have to....

That means do I have the jumpers on the MOBO correct or not??

having very similar problems with that mobo, vista and fron t panel audio connections, I think its down to some very flaky drivers tbh, I cant get to the bottom of it.

A lot of slightly older cases have audio ports that are wired to the older AC97 spec. Most newer motherboards that have a 'HD' audio onboard use the newer HD wiring. There is a difference in the way the plug that goes to the motherboard is wired. Use Google to find the information on the difference.

my antec 900 has both types, and the mobo accepts both, the weird thing is it all works fine in XP but wont play ball in vista.

Another thing that case has is a printed diagram showing the differences. Maybe post a scan of it for others to see.

OK will do, but they are both wired to 2 plugs with a dead pin so they can only be attached to the header one way round, much better than the old way where you had to attach then one cable at a time like on my old coolermaster case. Weird thing is it all works fine in XP, just not in vista, as more time goes by I'm thinking its just rubbish soundmax drivers in vista.
