I'm in my 40s and have never known of northern lights in the UK. All of a sudden it's becoming a normality.Sun's at the peak of it's 11 year cycle, so there's increased solar activitiy.

It's always been a thing and it's not uncommon to see them in northern areas, coastal areas etc and areas with dark skies generally.I'm in my 40s and have never known of northern lights in the UK. All of a sudden it's becoming a normality.
They’re mostly invisible to the naked eye. Everyone having in their pocket a high sensitivity camera capable of resolving light from the non-visible spectrum is probably the difference you notice.I'm in my 40s and have never known of northern lights in the UK. The main difference is, say compared to 11ish years ago at the last solar maximum you'll have hardly any electronic devices in folks pockets capable of capturing them, and far less of a social media footprint to drive awareness to Joe public and spread pictures etc.
Previously the folks that got the best pictures of the aurora would need a DSLR and a tripod so it was more of a hobbyist kind of thing aurora-hunting
The twice I've seen them this year they have been very noticeable to the naked eye. Way more noticeable than when I say them in Lapland. They’re mostly invisible to the naked eye.
