Austin track layout unveiled (for 2012 season)

That was the aim, they wanted to copy some good sections from other tracks.
At the end of the day there is only so much that can be done with a race track, everyone complains when its a pure tilke drome, then when he copies some good sections people aren't happy either :p

Oh lay off it. It's far more interesting than his tracks are normally.
It isn't completely flat. I don't see what gives it a "oh that's so obviously Tilke it must suck" look here.
Fast straights, uphill and downhill braking points.

Judging from your post he could have too the best bits of Spa and placed them in a different order, but if it had Tilke's name on it you'd hate it?

That circuit screams Tilke! so loud it's laughable. With the exception of Turn 8 at Turkey there's nowt to get excited about on his design CV, and even that isn't exactly white knuckle stuff, with acres of tarmac run off. I know its the modern way, but it doesn't mean to say I have to like it.

Whatever the end result, I doubt we'll see it for many seasons anyway. With a bit of luck it might just be one of the "Sky" grand prix's, then I'll hardly see it at all. :D

/end of bitter rant

I think the idea is that you don't make a great track by copying good bits from others. When Tilke starts from scratch, the results are largely forgettable. It remains to be seen whether the result of copying corners from other tracks gives a better result.

It's quite telling that Silverstone specifically didn't use Tilke for the alterations 2 years ago, and have made what are fairly unanimously regarded as improvements to the circuit.

A picture for those that haven't seen form Austin.

Looking down the startline to T1. That's some elevation change!

I'm not convinced. F1 braking zones are already short, putting them on an uphill slope makes them even shorter, so even less chance of overtaking.

But makes the driver un-sighted into the apex so more chance for error. Could be interesting if everybody bunches up at the start :o

Plus in such a low speed corner downforce is going to be almost non existent. If the apex is close to the crest of the hill then the cars are going to get very light very quickly.

Wow, just wow, I think it looks great. I would LOVE to go to this, how much money do you think we're talking here guys including accomodation, tickets and flights?

Oh dear. :o

Work on the Circuit of the Americas in Austin has been stopped indefinitely, the company has confirmed.

A statement says that the stoppage is pending a contract with Bernie Ecclestone being completed.

It’s understood that Ecclestone offered a new contract to COTA in the light of a dispute between the organization and Tavo Hellmund, who holds the original contract for the event.

i get the feeling bernie doesnt want circuit of americas he just wanted a way to generate intrest in america and he seems to have done that.

his real aim is a crappy street track.

the quicker he dies the better for f1 imo hes just to greedy and hurts the sport more than anything these days

Time line is already tight to get it finished in time for the race (as suggested in a DC video transmitted recently) - if tools are down for much longer 2012 race is going to be a non starter anyway

Looks like a great track, just hope it actually gets built and raced on (with F1 cars)
