Australia

Something to think about...

Your only going for 2 weeks. When you consider 2 days of that will be travel (there & Back) + you will be knackered after the trip, you havent really got a long time there.

I've driven from Sydney to Brisbane (and back) for the hell of it in a weekend and also driven Sydney to the Great Ocean road and back in a matter of days. I loved the idea of the road trip etc... but in reality you end up spending most of your time in the vehicle and if you are doing the driving your mostly concentrating on the road.

For only 2 weeks, I'd consider purchasing some internal flights (do this before you leave the UK, I made the mistake of waiting to get to Oz before I booked one year and they are MUCH more expensive) and maybe hiring a car for a day or two at each major city so you can go out and see some more out of the way things.

Cheers.

Wow thanks for all the replies guys.

I havent really got time to check out all the links atm so I will sit down with my GF at the weekend and look at them in detail instead of rushing now, so more questions will probably come then.

As I said, it isnt really a holiday as sorts, its more of fact finding mission to see if a move would be feasable for us. I don't think she has ever met her aunt so thats the reason for the trip down to Melbourne.

The idea of a camper van was a possibility thrown up to cheapen accomodation, not a real road trip (tho that would be ace in one of them painted vans).

I think the cheapest accomodation would be a hostal, maybe rent a car for a few days to do day trips out on days off. Then get internal flights to Melbourne.

I'll look into the internal flights thing, anyone know of any cheap sites to book from the uk? (Roo Airways)

Thanks for the info, more Q's to come no doubt

U will find Caravan parks really cheap :)

If you are looking for a place to live i suggest you got try out Western Australia (Perth). At the moment they cant get enough workers over there and i think they have cheap houses.
Queensland is also said to be a pretty cheap place to live due to such low taxes in that that.
Sydney is quite an expansive place to live btw :)

Hey zip Adelaide alright mate, great wine area. Wolfe-Blass takes some beating. Only thing wrong is that bloody half hour SA put on. It's not that hot either, hit 44 when we were in Broken Hill - that was hot!

Not hot!!! We had a week of mid 40's in Adelaide during the summer and one night it didn't get under 31 degrees.

You have to admit that's exceptional for there usually 30 - 35 isn't it

I would say about 28 normally, but we had a cold summer last season so it was a probably a little colder
Adelaide can Experience weather from -5 to 40 degrees.
Its a huge range, we get everything really.
If we are very very very lucky the Mt lofty ranges gets like an inch or 2 of snow :p

And we have the biggest wine districts in Australia IIRC.
There are Vineyards all over the state and even the french are importing our wine

Yep true, although it did seem to be nearer 38 for the most part. The good thing is that it's a very dry heat here so easier to cope with than the humid conditions elsewhere.

Damm 38 degree summers, we had one 2 years ago. It reached 50+ in other states though when i viseted

Wine tasting in the Mclaren (spelling?) chatting to the young lady serving us I asked what she drunk. She replied " Not the rubbish we send to you!"

Well we had a sit down tonight to look at some prices and ideas.

Do you think this is too much? looking back at it, it does seem tough.

Arriving on the 11th in Sydney, staying 3 nights to do our checking out of the town for a 'move out there'. Hiring a camper van on the 14th and traveling to melbourne and staying over the 15th. Then heading along the coast right up to Cairns, at no particular pace, stopping at attractions that take our fancy. Dropping the van off in cairns on the 23 and flying internally to Sydney for the flight home on the 24th.

I'm trying to think of costs as well. I think internal flights and hotels in each town would probably work out expensive.

Thing is, they want skilled people out there dont they? And I think the profession I intend to work in is suited more for the cities. I wouldnt mind just getting away from it all somewhere like that.

Cheers for the comments.

Why not just fly straight to Melbourne to start with? then you'd just be travelling in one direction (North) for your camper van journey.

This thread got the theme for "Crocodile" Dundee stuck in my head. Now I'm wondering, does Walkabout Creek exist in the Northern Territory? Google Earth can't locate it.

Whats your Job?
It seems most jobs are up for grabs over there because the city is booming :)

What's the current forecast? Weather here sucks this Summer, especially as the solstice has passed, I guess ours is due to deteriorate?
