So McLaren are using what is essentially an exhaust system that was essentially a second choice, thrown together at the last moment and they're already fast...there must be quite a lot of potential there for improvements?

Wasn't even second choice. They started testing with 2 exhaust systems, had another 2 in active development... and what they currently have on the car isn't one of them.
