Australian Grand Prix 2012, Albert Park Circuit - Race 1/20

No point in getting up early any more, used to feel awesome being one of the 'few' to get up at 'what the hell? this cant be a real time o'clock'.

That feeling was eroded a bit by the times being shifted and killed this year entirely as the BBC didn't feel the first race may be one people want to see.

I think you may need to read up on how the the BBC live races were decided...

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/sport/...-disappoint-fans-but-aunties-hands-were-tied/

the BBC had the first three picks. It went for Monaco, Silverstone and the season finale in Brazil. You can't really argue with any of those. The first two speak for themselves while the third – well, imagine if we get a repeat of 2008 next year with Lewis Hamilton going for the title at Interlagos… the BBC couldn't afford to take the risk.
Sky then had the next three picks and then there was a system whereby I'm told they alternated. But there were stipulations. Neither channel could pick three consecutive races. In other words, the BBC was not allowed to have three consecutive races live while Sky was not allowed three consecutive races exclusively live, which made it rather tricky. Try it for yourself.
For instance, the BBC could not have Monza – one of the classic circuits and one which most F1 fans would want – because that would have made it three in a row with Spa and Singapore on either side. The BBC also had other considerations such as the Euros next summer, which clash with Canada.

The BBC chose 3 races it felt more important the the UK audience than the first race to ensure Sky didn't take them. Sky, from what I read, chose Australia as part of its first 3 races. Hence why the BBC don't have the 1st race.

Not quali, but I'll be up for the race.

My only concern with the Sky coverage is a repeat appearance of that 'Fenners' ****. F1 != football, Sky.

Same here, mainly because it is on a friend's Sky that I will be watching it on and only wants to watch the race live, don't think he would appreciate me strolling round at some ungodly hour Saturday morning :p.

I am looking forward to coming into work tomorrow to look through all of the times for P1 and P2 over a nice cup of tea :)

I would have dropped either monaco or silverstone for the aus GP, asides from the 'glamour' monaco is utter rubbish and silverstone is rarely interesting unless it rains.

You would expect the British Broadcasting Company to not guarantee it had the British Grand Prix live and instead go for Australia?

Monaco I will let you have though. Personally, I love it, and think its part of the DNA of what makes F1 what it is, but a lot of people think its just boring. But the viewing times alone would make the BBC more interested in Monaco than Australia I would have though?

Good job you're not in charge then.

BBC...drop the British GP...riiiiiiight.

I've been looking at people's predictions and very few seem to be putting Vettel in 1st place. I understand that the season hasn't yet started so predicting results at this stage is very difficult, but I am perplexed that Vettel isn't most people's prediction for a race win, especially, when he was the in-form driver at the end of last year and might have the fastest car this year.

With this in mind:

1. Vettel (easy win, unless he has car failure - reliability may be a problem for RBR this year)
2. Hamilton (assuming he doesn't crash into somebody)
3. Button

It is possible that McLaren may have a slightly better car than RBR (we will know in a few days), but this is no longer good enough to get the title/race win. They need to produce a car which is faster than RBR (just like RBR needed a better car in 2012, to beat Alonso).

If Vettel can maintain the stellar form of last year (while Alonso is in a bad car), Vettel should get his 3rd title this year. If he improves a little further and establishes himself as THE best driver in F1, then I Vettel may add to the records he broke last year and for the next few years, other teams may have to have a re-think on how many risks they wish to take during the Winter development (something that Ferrari already did during Winter 2011, due to the immense pressure that they are now under). Other teams will either accept not winning titles for the next 3-5 years OR they take risks and hope to produce a car which is much better than RBR, allowing their drivers the opportunity to bypass the RBR/Vettel factor.

I'm hoping for a closely fought title race, this season, as I am not a fan of Vettel or RBR, but at this very early stage, I can only see a continuation of 2011 (ie. Vettel wins and everybody else fights for 2nd place). I sincerely hope that RBR do not have the best car. I really do.

why taske the final race of the season? the championship is likely to be decided by then anyway and imo its not been a very good race recently

Well looks like my Callander was wrong, appears I'm not in sat night :D, also there's not enough people in work tomorrow to do any actuall work, so I just have to turn up to the office and show the ugly face about.
So I'll be trying to wake up early for practice.

Oh wait 1am, well guess I'm staying up late then. Might grab a snooze in a bit.

I dont blame SKY for picking Australia. I'd have done the same. It is the first race of the season with arguably one of the biggest global audiences due to it being the season opener. Ideally, you want to choose the GPs with the biggest audience to satisfy advertisers. And satisfying advertisers is arguably, SKY's main concern.

2007 (last race), 2008 (last race) and 2009 (not last race) all decided at Brazil. 2010 decided at the last race (not Brazil). I imagine the final round at Brazil would have been second on their absolute must have list, right behind Silverstone.

Sacrilege to suggest dropping silverstone

Who's being hardcore and watching the qualifying live? I'm going to get up for the full coverage on raceday

I'll try anyway! Hope Sky provide a decent show... should be with Brundle.

All being well watching Quali and the race live, love the early starts.

Will be up, make pancakes, watch quali, go for a bikeride for my Saturday morning... Early night so i can be up for the race :D

Really? For me Silverstone is just average. I think because it just seems to be a big open space. The races there are average to good, but there is just something about the venue - it looks bland and boring, for both F1 and MotoGP.

Still i'd have it over Valencia, Barcelona, Hungary, Bahrain. Korea

SPA, Canada, Suzuka - are my favorites, so maybe I just like a particular style of track.
