Australian Grand Prix 2013, Melbourne - Race 1/19

On McLaren, does anyone else think they are starting to fall apart a bit and are chasing pointless things? Banning all their mechanics from wearing shorts in order to create a good 'image' for the sponsors seems like a petty thing to do that's only going to annoy the guys.

Perez has had a short back and sides and been told to tuck his shirt in too.

going to wait till sunday before i get all depressed about vettel/redbull winning everything lol, it might not happen, the times look very close and the race on sunday could show a different picture.

I think peter sauber nailed it on the head though when he said anyone who thought red bull wouldnt be at the front was in for a nasty surprise given the resources they have. I dont think its possible that redbull could be anywhere but right at the front given how much money they have behind them, when they were caught of guard at the start of last year, the amount of different iterations of the rear end they brought was staggering, including running different versions of the same car for each driver to figure it out, can any other team afford to do that?, i personally cant wait till this whole pr excersise of theirs is over and they bugger off!. At least horner doesnt come out with that crap anymore about how they are a small team blah blah.

Really? That's ridiculous and is only going to demotivate their staff.

No wonder Hamilton felt stifled, in fact if you read his column on the BBC website, he really drives that point home :)

Yeah Ted noticed they were all wearing trousers and then one of the McLaren guys Tweeted Sky's coverage to confirm they had been banned from wearing shorts to create a professional image. They are all wearing what look like suit trousers.

They seem to be massively preoccupied by creating an image, and it just has this whiff about it of them trying to paper over the cracks that are forming. In the space of a few months they have lost Hamilton, Paddy Lowe, Vodafone, and probably Mercedes.

It would make me chuckle if Hamilton ends up proving the doubters right, only because his move was derided by so many.

I am certainly not a fan of the corporate image outlook in an F1 Team. Are the mechanics all wearing Hugo Boss trousers?

I imagine they will be a sponsoring brand of some sort. Who makes the shirts?

Hamilton's move to Mercedes is hinged on success in 2014 and beyond, and should be judged on that. Any success he has in 2013 is just a bonus.

McLaren will catch up, they always do. But it may be too late if RBR/Ferrari and maybe even Lotus or Merc have scampered off with all the points already.

Drove past Albert Park earlier during FP2 and the noise was absolutely fantastic. Could even hear the cars from the CBD. Wish I'd managed to convince the guys to go with the 4 day pass as so wanted to be there! Ah well, a meal and a few drinks out round St Kilda wasn't a bad alternative :)

Really hope this weekend doesn't turn into a Vettel/Red Bull whitewash, that would be absolutely gutting. Shame to see the McLaren pace being as slow as it is, hope they manage to turn something around between now and Sunday.

McLaren are in deep ****

"Jenson Button believes that a top 10 finish in the Australian Grand Prix would be very positive
for McLaren considering how far off the pace the team's 2013 car is."

You do have to really question why they didn't just evolve their 2013 car. It finished the season as the fastest and is it really the case they hit a development wall at that point, when others have not?

Yes they want to take some risks, yes it is very early doors and anything can happen, but it just seems odd to do it when the regs are shifting next year anyhow.

Banned the car being fast as well :p

How is F1 still stuck in last century. So much space on the screen for stuff, move the times over to the corner, wtf doesn't have a widescreen and watches F1? Second, put up other times, rotate between fastest lap in practice and last lap so we can keep an eye out on long run pace easily. They've got the fastest laps up there, and they haven't changed in 30 mins + because everyone is doing slow/race pace laps, and yet we can't see a single time, 10 years ago I could accept it, its been rubbish they haven't been doing it for at least 5 years now.

Totally agree. I meant to make a thread about this in the past. Why do we have to have it so in the way? Move it right over to the sides for the love of god.

Remember where Ferrari were at the Australian GP last year, and then where their world class driver got them..

So don't worry, McLaren will be dragged forward by their top driver and do well....

Oh no, sorry, forgot, they lost Hamilton didn't they! :p

SMR is going to get you :D

Mind you button is now saying they may not get in the top ten in Q2

Goes against my better judgement to say this :p but I agree with you.

Merc seems to get written off a lot and I know we have only had FP but looks like Merc could beat McLaren which is a bit a slap in the face for them.

Mercedes have the ingredients, but they need to make them work. There is massive potential for a multi billion pound, highly skilled highly staffed high profile flop.

McLaren on the other hand seem to be loosing all their key ingredients while trying to put on a brave face. I think its quite telling that both Whitmarsh and now Button have openly said they are struggling. You know that if a team allows its people to say things are bad, then it means things are REALLY bad.
