Australian Grand Prix 2015, Melbourne - Race 1/19

Yes/no, unknown, I don't think Ferrari were remotely pushing hard. They just went out on softs to get it over with, go out, banker lap end up with some scrubbed softs for the race with a easy lap in them. Sometimes tires work better with a little heat cycling in them and they last better than putting on completely fresh tires, maybe Ferrari know something we don't in that case.

Either way I think Ferrari went out and did a VERY conservative lap.

Come on, doubled the gap in fp1, fp2 and q1.
Ferrari on faster tire as well.

Mclaren, oppps. Seriously, what worries me about the Mclaren is, even at supposedly not max power there were some of the shallow turns in the straights where other teams were flat out and they lifted.... with a supposedly great aero car and not even at high speed.

Second, RBR let alone all the other Renault teams had turned up the engine WAY before the first qualifying session last year and Mclaren/Honda had two tests in November and a 2+ month advantage over everyone.

I think it's very strange that even at the end of testing they didn't plan to put in one of MANY engines they used and just turn the power up and see what it could do over a lap, so what if it blows, if they all blew up at 50-80% power anyway at least try one lap.

Also, Verstappen... I have high hopes.

And sadly, I win that bet.

Both McLarens on the back row. That hurts.

But, what the hell is going on with Toro Rosso? When did they switch to a Mercedes engine? ;)

McLaren in a worse place now that they ever were under Whitmarsh. Button says this partnership will win titles, but the likelihood is that he will have retired by that time.

Alonso will be on the phone to the doctors to get his sick note extended. Worst move potentially in Motorsport (or sport in general) history?

Other members have tried to explain it to you, but you just don't get it.

lol at McLaren.

Don't get what? That you post consistent rubbish to fuel your agenda against the V6s? I get that.

You suggested a solution to restricted running caused by only having 4 engines designed to last 5 race weekends each was to use "bombproof" V8s engines designed to last..... only 2 race weekends each!

The reliability of the V8s is pathetic compared to the V6s.

A faster tire isn't faster if you're driving it slower. A conservative lap on mediums would be risky, a conservative lap on softs meant a quick run and back in, session over, done. Ferrari did that more than once last year as well.

As for the overall gaps in various sessions, again what the cars were doing means they aren't directly comparable but more importantly cars will be good at different tracks. A bigger gap here doesn't necessarily mean a bigger gap elsewhere. It won't surprise me if Mercedes are further ahead at least earlier in the year, particularly as Merc spent the most tokens on the engine. Where they'll be when the other cars use their tokens is going to be more important.

However that doesn't change that I just don't think those lap times were remotely representative of what Ferrari can do. Ferrari were MUCH, much faster in practice thus I think those were just easy laps to get through and nothing else.

Alonso is currently on the phone to Ferrari asking for a job :p

Haha, his history of moving teams at exactly the wrong time continues.

McLaren should be ashamed of themselves. Yes it's a new car with a new engine and Honda are finding their feet but no more than any of the other teams were at the start of last year yet none of the other major teams were anywhere near this bad, not even Renault in pre-season testing.

For a team with the resources and history of both McLaren & Honda to be this bad is farcical.

Anyone out there using Sky's web stream?

Have they removed the race control feature with the driver tracker, onboard cameras and pit lane camera? Can't find it anywhere.

That is precisely what I was thinking, has he got some beard there as well which just due to camera angle/light wasn't showing up or has he just got a tache?

He had beard yesterday, but today he's clean shaven except for the sex offender lip fluff.

It also appears the "your the B team" memo never made it to STR.... :D

Loved that pit radio.

Raikkonen sounding a bit tired and confused "Are we going out again?"
Mechanic "I think we are getting ready to run"

When the driver and mechanic aren't sure whats going on, you know the old Ferrari are coming back. :D

Did he have the beard in the interview they showed with Ted earlier? I presume that was filmed before today, I think that is why I was confused, it looked SO much worse as a tache on it's own.

B team memo? I think TR looked great all preseason and said so. Seems very odd that TR seem to have better engine mapping/drivability, it suggests the engine software is better. Should RBR not be using the same software? As in, I presume they think they could do better but it's not worked, TR appear to have the engine working better so it seems bizarre that RBR wouldn't just drop back to whatever the default map is. Somehow they made Ricciardo's car worse in each session.
