Autopatcher, no more?

Surely if you are using Windows Update then some resets are required in the middle? I can remember the last time i used Windows Update and resets were required.

Today I had to setup a new machine with XP and just opened autopatcher (after installing SP2) chose the updates - left it and it did the rest.

I am sure you can't install ALL the updates at once with Windows Update and requires at least one reset and going back to the windows update page to get the rest.

With autopatcher - only one restart is needed at the end of installing all the updates.

I do agree with you Durzel. I can't really see the advantage of Autopatcher over Windows Update.

For your nLite did you just download all the updates and point nLite at the exe's?
Yeah, exactly that. When I used nLite (this was a while ago now, it might've changed) there was a installation step where you could choose updates, etc to be installed during the XP install itself. I just downloaded the individual EXEs from the MS site and pointed it (nLite) to them.

Ah right. Yes I think you are right. There are some updates that need other updates to have been installed before they can be installed.

From a fresh install of XP SP2 and going on the Windows Update Site:

Install Windows Installer 3 and a couple of other things
Restart
Install most updates
Restart
Install updates for those updates
Restart

Not to mention getting updates for IE6 when you're getting IE7.

...he added that Windows Update for pre-Vista versions of Windows can now be accessed using Firefox...

You what?

You couldn't use Windows Update with anything other than IE....

I have used Windiz before and its pretty good but it has nothing on Autopatcher - this program is a godsend - shame its finishing.

I have discovered some excellent microsoft freebies using it though.

Power Menu - transparent windows + other cool stuff.
Windows desktop search - like google desktop.

I have a CD I made using batch scripts and all the updates downloaded onto a CD. All I do each format is pop it in after a format and it installs IE7, WMP11 and hotfixes and even software hotfixes. It's great. If anybody would like the batch file just let me know.
