I meant ignore that it's cold and icey and stay inside and forget going to work etc. :p

But yes, open curtains so you can admire the interesting driving style people seem to adopt in the snow and ice. :p

Im going to Austria - Skiing in January and need to get myself a set of snow chains just in case. Don't know whether to trust these or not over snow chains. Pointless gettin both.

chains. that austrian review didn't rate the socks too highly

Because the Autosocks are made from fabric instead of steel, they lack durability. I imagine that driving any distance NOT over snow or ice will shred them.

This is something that has only just occured to me, would end up being more of a pain getting out to remove them than they are worth on a daily basis.

Perhaps worth keeping a pair in the boot for emergencies though? Very easy to get stuck even on small hills with wide tyres and very little manual throttle control it seems.

Surely you'd take them off once you were back on tarmac though?

That would be the idea, but chances are you would:
1) forget
2) not bother because it's only a few miles to the end of your journey
3) not bother because it's too much hassle to stop, put gloves on, get out, loosen them, roll forward a meter, take them off, store them, remove gloves (or clean grubby hands) & continue on your journey.
4) not want to risk crouching in the road by the side of your car as traffic passes by spraying you with slush.

Snow chains are actually a legal requirement on the roads around the ski resorts in Austria. I don't believe these can replace snow chains (although I do know someone that uses a pair in the Lake District and he rates them very highly - got him out of a few sticky situations, if you excuse the pun).

i've got 225/45 R17s conti winters on atm
and i know you can get 18 inch winter tyres too [255/35 R18, €300 each]

they are expensive, but it depends how much use you are going to get out of them..

1) I dont think you can get "winter" tyres in the sizes i need, i certainly cant find any

2) A set of tyres is over £1000, these are about 50 quid :p

Yeah sorry wasn't thinking about the cost.. but if you are driving regularly in cold temperatures it could be worth it.

Thing is with this country, a winter like this one (at least so far) makes such an investment worthwhile, but another year they'll be pointless!
