Autumn Budget 2022

Anyone here given up an energy fix because of the 2500 cap that now wishes they didn't due to the support being scaled back next year?

Must be some.

Because even the benefit rise will not cover the rise in food and energy prices.
Support is already in a place for energy and don't forget the most vulnerable already received extra support on top. Working peoples wage rises are not covering the rise in food or energy prices either and they get no extra support, actually it is the opposite. They pay more to fund these benefits.

Surely a medditeranean country would be ideal, nice weather, much cheaper CoL and a pension would go much further...

That's the plan (it's from where I'm from originally) - just need to convince the wife.... The kids would love it!

We fixed in July, it wasn’t the best deal. We’ve since been moved, not by choice, and we’re still deciding how hard to argue to be put back onto the fixed. Shouldn’t matter too much until the following winter.

You were moved without consent??

Just went to check mine wasn't moved!

Well the two things that's going to hurt me is the council tax rise and the lift of the energy cap.

The council tax isn't too bad it's another £10 per month so we can handle that.

The energy cap rise is a bitch, basically we've halved our energy usage but due to the rises our energy bill will be pretty much back to how it was in July (About £200 per month). Feels like all this work and worry was put into it for nothing, but on the other hand, I'm conscious of the fact if we didn't, our bills will be well over £350 a month

But that’s an issue for your employer. Stop blaming the government and those on benefits for your work not giving you adequate pay rises

The 'most vulnerable' are already getting inflation benefit rises, why do they need another £900 bung as well? As usual the working middle absolutely shafted.

I'm pretty sick of it too, watching those on benefits just get hand out after hand out. They've had five to six bungs now in the last year? And us middle earners get rewarded for our hard work with tax hikes? **** that...

Who’d you vote for last time?

It’s no secret the tories don’t support the middle earners. They support themselves and the rich. Remember this when you’re next at the ballot box.

INB4 BUT JEremY CorBiN.

Indeed, they seemed to get confused when we asked to have our credit back and go onto a variable direct debit (not variable tariff). We fixed at 44 and 11 which seemed terrible at the time…

Not seen what the new unit costs are. Worth fighting for sure! Even if it doesn't work out.

I'm fortunate that I'm earning a reasonable wage. But just me. My wife is on just about the minimum so we'll be surviving off my pension and the state pension. And whatever little pensions she had before becoming a mother and kissing her career goodbye (out of choice ).

The pressure on my shoulders really does get to me.

Does make me wonder if I should return to Europe or further afield.
Welcome to my boat. There's little/no recognition of the sole parent earner in the family. They combine household earnings when it suits them, i.e child benefit qualification, but it's not recognised in the tax system, or by the high income child tax charge (which hasn't been raised since 2013, shocking)

I'm abstaining next election. Even if Labour does all the things the shadow chancellor said the tories should have done and collect all this money. I don't trust them to look after the middle earners either, they'll just shovel all the money into benefits claimants with more bungs, throw money at illegal migrants, and twerking tranny story time for kids.

People like me are screwed whoever is in power

It's ridiculous - if we both earned £99,999 we'd qualify for 30 free hours for childcare, and tax free choldcare etc... (though our youngest will be starting school so not really relevant anymore). But if 1 of you earns over 100k even if the other earns 0, you don't qualify. So apparently earning 180k+ as a household enables you to get all the benefits, but earning 101k doesn't if it's down to 1 individual. It's bonkers. It should be based on household income.

Is there an Autumn statement summary yet? BBC's web site is showing a live feed link at the top of their site but they're a bit cagey on a summary and there is usually one by now. What about sin taxes (booze and cigarettes)?

I agree with other posters that pensioners seem to be the winners in this budget and the low/middle earners (who still have mortgages or pay rents) are being shafted.

What a **** system.
