Autumn Statement 2012

Expected to announce more cuts, apparently. Great idea that has worked so well for the last 30 months. Will be interesting to see what actually does get announced and how much rumour and speculation was wrong.

Just needs someone shouting "you don't know what you're doing" on repeat at him.

expecting any kind of growth from massive cuts and then trying to "spend on essential areas" is just a failure of policy and a confusion of aims. Hope they look stupid and resign as the government soon.

You aren't Hatter the Mad for nought are you :p

I genuinely believe it does need to go up, and I know it is harsh on some people, but being faced with a choice of what to tax and what to cut, I'd rather see fuel for cars taxed (and perhaps a deduction for the logistics industry to compensate).

It's about time people start being strong-armed into ridesharing, using more economical cars, using other forms of transport.

I don't buy the argument (enough) that 'yes, but what about people who live in the sticks and are broke despite working and commuting' - there's always going to be a more sorely affected fringe case with any decision like this, and the fact is that when the economics require, people innovate and change behaviour.

Meanwhile those who can afford it are paying more tax, and we're creating a greater disincentive to burn carbon.

*puts on flame suit over naive self*

So basically the chancellor is going to say "remember that plan that everyone told me wouldn't work, well it hasn't worked so we're going to continue doing what hasn't worked for a few more years - oh btw, for things we agree with like Free Schools, we'll find some extra money".

People like you need to manage their expectations against reality (same with Obama):
  • This is one guy
  • This is not an ecomonic power
  • We are extremely susceptible, more than many other countries, to external influences
  • It has only been two years
What exactly were you expecting?

Unfortunately the credit is low. It will get a lot lower if they start borrowing like was done in the past. It is a rut that many countries have ended up eventually defaulting from. Hard times and it is natural to not want it to happen or want others to take the pain instead.

Or, more likely, "well you voted for us." :p
