Avast keeps locking up is it the SSD?

I just finished building a pretty powerful rig for my brother in law and noticed that when I try to install Avast the PC keeps locking up, it will install then lock up on the finishing screen, upon restarting the PC again a few seconds in the PC will just lock up again.

Is it something to do with the SSD? It's a Crusial M4SSD 128gb.

Operating system Windows 7 64bit latest drivers the lot.

The entire system has the latest drivers.

I am using Avast on my PC a similar spec but with a normal hard drive and it has never locked up so am wondering if its something to do with the SSD?

I have Avast installed on my Windows 7 64bit M4 64gb working just fine. What motherboard do you have? Is it plugged in to a native SATA 3/2 port and not something like Marvell? Is it in AHCI mode?

Err ok now you lost me am using the Asus M5A97 Pro the hard drive is in Sata 1 slot on the board. There are 4 sata ports and I put it in Sata 1.

Shouldnt it be in AHCI mode by default? If not where do I go for this?

Also the PC works perfetly fine when Avast is not installed so doesnt make sense.

Looking at the board all SATA ports are native so nothing wrong there.

Some boards tend to have IDE mode on as default, so if you go into BIOS then you can change this to AHCI to get the full speed and features of the SSD. Bare in mind you need to reinstall Windows right after this.

What's the full system spec of the PC? Could be something else causing it. Try a new Windows install and try install other software such as games, office, etc. and see if the problem occurs again, just to rule out it's not Avast causing the problem. And just checking, you have downloaded it from the official Avast site right?

OMG You serious? *Cries* I have to reinstall everything again?? So this AHCI mode only affects SSD drives? Also yes from official site.

16gb DDR 3 kington hyperX genesis grey

Well the SSD in IDE mode shouldn't really affect the Avast install, so leave that as a last step.

Does everything else install fine? I also notice you're using 4x4gb RAM, so I would suggest running a memtest for each stick to rule out nothing is wrong with them.

Well as advised everything else works perfects its only avast giving the problem however doing some research I found others with the same problem.

Oh and I also found this would this be helpful to me even though i dont have intel chipset?

Yup,that guide will work fine with your brother-in-law's setup.

Strange, so everything else installs fine except for Avast? This is a really strange one...

I would recommend taking out the RAM modules out though and trying each stick one at a time to rule out it's not a RAM problem.

Perhaps also grab a spare hard drive and install Windows on that, make sure you unplug any other drives before doing so, just to rule out the SSD.

Another alternative is to install a different anti-virus such as AVG...

Cheers many options there but I think i will try the AHCI one first and then see how it goes.

With Avast it installs then when it gets to the finishing screen it just locks up the whole pc, when i reboot it says it installed then after a few seconds the whole pc locks up again.

I remove avast and the whole system works fine again very strange.

If you aren't using AHCI mode then you can fix this.

You need to change the SATA Mode from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS.

But you can't just do that otherwise your system won't boot.

You need to apply the "Fix it" here first.

So first make the changes in the link, restart the PC and go straight into the BIOS, change the SATA mode to AHCI, save the changes and the PC will start again and you'll be using AHCI mode.
