Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix)

Watched first episode. We quite liked it. Better than expected to be honest. Casting could have been better, but other than that all good.

In the animated series Appa was also frozen with Aang. Presumably it’s the same here rather than Appa being super old and just happening to be around when Aang defrosted.

Finished it.

I guess they pitched this at a more younger audience still, everything from the acting, cast, pacing feels very cartoon like. It doesn’t feel like they tried to make it for the people who used to watch it and now grown up to be adults but people are still kids.

It’s okay I think, but my expectations were low, never seen the cartoon and it just about pass.

Reviews seem fairly good. Can't say I know anything about Avatar. I think I tried the first episode of the anime a long time ago and found it very childish. I might give this a go at some point.
You missed out. Yes it has few childish episodes. But it get serious and some episodes were dark.

@Raymond Lin deffo give the cartoon series a try.

Azula and Mai are such a miscast. Azula comes across as bratty than intimidating. And her circle face. Mai is just too plus sized compared to the cartoon counterpart.

General zao looks good but comes across as stupid in a few parts, in the cartoon he was a lot smarter. Princess Yuwei looks ok.

Yeah. Many characters are cast wrong. Shame. We are enjoying it otherwise.

Azula was a huge disappointment.

I'm hoping the cast improve as they age with the seasons (assuming it carries on), but I appreciate that they're sticking to the story and the spirit of the show. Often you get these dumbass directors who what to sprinkle their ego all over a remake - why mess with a hugely successful formula.

The cartoon is excellent. The content is pitched at all ages but there are adult themes in respect of ‘how to live your life’ and ‘navigating conflict’ that are superb. It’s also pretty darn funny.

I haven’t seen the live action series, but Doug does a spoiler free review that suggests it’s passable; effectively a ‘live action Disney remake’ that inevitably loses something by existing outside of the medium of animation, which unfortunately also ends up feeling a bit generic:

Cartoon is better for sure. But if you liked that then apart from some dodgy casting I can't see why one would dislike this.

It's this like for like vs the animation?

Of so I need to give this at least a year before I watch
I wouldn't say it is. Obviously they had to condense the live action so they butchered so much. Cartoon is leagues better than this. Dare I say, one thr greatest animation series ever made. Yea beginning few episodes may seem childish but it gets better almost instantly.
