Average IT Support wage?

Seen many school/university junior IT jobs starting on 15/16k... i'd say a junior starting on 21k with no experience is either an exaggeration, or a complete extreme. Can't think why you'd pay a complete rookie with no experience that sort of wage...

Why would i exaggerate?? Round here no one would apply for technician jobs for less. 2 schools in the area where I used to work have just employed technicians, both advertised between 20k and 21.5k.

One school is spending £700 per week paying us to supply them with technicians for 3 days per week.

I guess it's to do with location, the housing stock isn't exactly cheap here!

Sorry if it sounded like I insinuated that you were fibbing... bad choice of wording on my part. What region are you in then?

Can't believe how low some of these salaries are.

I've been doing this for 4 years and would say £25-£30k depending on experience for that sort of thing and if SE England.

Even my junior technician started on £21k with no experience.

Damn it! I'm moving back down south! :(

£15k if you're lucky.

you're kidding
yes at entry level you might be looking at that (incidentally exactly what i started on) but after two years and the increased responsibility that would bring i reckon you should be on 18-20 easy, depending on the size of company, if it was a bigger company a bigger increase could be expected
peterborough is a reasonably affluent area and wages shouldnt differ too much from those in cambridge

Sorry about that, that was pretty vague.

I would say i worked for a small-mid sized company, been there for 2 years and i'm based in East Anglia.

I do pretty much anything required from building a PC to creating servers and administrating Citrix, Exchange etc...

Thanks

Our support guys are paid £20-25k if that helps.

IT Support guys get between 13-24k in the South West.

Build Monkey - 13-15k
1st Line Helpdesk - 15-21k
2nd line Floorwalker - 17-25k
Security Admin - 18-25k
1st/2nd Line Field Engineer - 18-25k

I would suggest in your area, with your experience youre looking at 20k minimum. London is only a hour away, perhaps you need to broaden your location horizons? Cambridge must be pretty near to you?

Aim to work on Projects, means that youll get project experience, then you'll have further oppourtunities. Current trend at the moment down here is testing seems to be screaming for Testing IT Satff. The perm wages are very attractive (30-50k) and around £300 a day contracting. Boring work, but money for old rope, a lot of experience quickly...

No I'm not kidding.

There is a glut of IT qualified people out there looking for work, they're two a penny. It's a buyers market.

regardless of what you "know"
that isnt the current state of the IT industry
yes there are people fighting hand and tooth for positions and as such the employers do get a choice
however the entry level of his position may well be 15k (it doesnt sound like basic helpdesk) but after two years it's likely he'll be well above that, remember that's two years in the same company, if i didnt get a rise from 15k after two years i wouldnt be in the company for very long

The IT market at the moment countrywide is booming, there are more jobs that suitable applicants. I appreciate that you live in the region, and have a company but you take a very blinkered view.

I wish I was a kid again, but I'm in my 30's, and have worked in IT for well over 10 years, and have run my own consultancy for the last 6 years, oh , and I project manage and I've run helpdesks and support depts, so I have no idea about current support staff wages! LOL ;)

I work in Cambrige for a company with about 80 employees. I've been there for 2 years now straight from uni and just been put up to £21k. My duties are pretty much everything involving Windows, Linux and hardware.

I got a junior sys admin position with no experience. North London. 20k. Its a company with 40 people, 2 years old and they look to rival the likes of money supermarket, uswitch and confused. Its mainly a unix job with windows sys admin to support the office too.
