Average speed checks

what about that theory that Clarkson came up with years ago that if you switch lanes between cameras you don't get caught.

I should imagine that load's of people up here are getting done now that they have installed these bloody things for the whole length of the A9. That road is a nightmare as it is without having to worry about these things.

They measure the time taken to drive between two cameras. You could drive past each camera at 100mph and then slow down to <whatever speed is required to average it out, 20 oddmph?> and you'd be fine.

Has that been confirmed though?

They could very easily fine you and say its between certain cameras rather than the whole stretch.

I just stick cruise on and forget about it but it is crazy the amount of drivers that just blast past.

there are active average speed cameras on the a537 just after the cat and fiddle pub, between Macclesfield and buxton.

I know because I got caught averaging 63 in what is now a 50 and was offered a speed awareness course

I drove a friend's car the other week on the M25 and as it cycled from 50 to 50 then 40 then 60 again multiple times I am dead certain I saw 2 flashes as I passed one set of lines, at the time I was doing 54 according to the speedo and the digital sign up ahead instructed 50. TBH I was moving with the pace of traffic in front, behind and either side so perhaps it flashed someone else...

Are they like cameras in Limehouse tunnel whereby it must flash 3 times and if it only flashes once or twice then you're safe?

He's not received anything in the mail yet :p

One of my drivers got caught 4 times on the M6 a few months back. Until then I'd never heard of anyone getting caught.....But he did.

Bumping a slightly old thread rather than creating a new one.

I was going to question about the leniency of Average Speed Checks. The west side of the M4 has a few stretches coated in them whilst doing some roadworks. I tend to just stick cruise control at 50 and then not have to worry about the speed. But some people fly past probably not even realising it's an average speed check. There was one idiot the other day who flew past in the outside lane, then must have realised and dropped his speed to about 40, which made the whole thing dangerous as everyone else doing 50 had caught up and couldn't get past him.

I've never been done by one, but almost every time I drop to 40 or 50 to go through them, someone still goes past doing 80 odd.

There's a bit on the M6 I think which is 40, on an empty motorway on a Sunday, pointless.

Looking here; http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/specs.htm they say the camera's are fitted with Infra Red so can work day and night.

So why is it, especially on the M1/M6 sections of average speed camera's they had flood lights pointing a little in front of the camera, almost as if they need to shine the light on your front bumper in order to capture the reg plate?

Surely it isn't worth the risk, regardless?

I still laugh at people that slow down to 50mph for the camera, then speed up again like they would a normal speed camera.

Indeed. I see so many people driving very much over the speed limit, and I wonder "do they know something I don't?". I'm quite happy to set cruise at 50 and leave them to test the system.

My opinion is that they are BS. I suspect most of them don't work. I've been through works with only two cameras, when three are needed for an average. Usually I just set CC to 60 and make progress. My attitude shouldn't be yours though - I'll get spanked one day and will have no-one to blame but myself.
