Average speed checks

My opinion is that they are BS. I suspect most of them don't work. I've been through works with only two cameras, when three are needed for an average. Usually I just set CC to 60 and make progress. My attitude shouldn't be yours though - I'll get spanked one day and will have no-one to blame but myself.

Might be different depending on area but on my speed awareness I was told any average camera's covering a section of road works are active and working at all times. This was after I got caught in an average section of the A14 that has/had roadworks

I agree, some installations will be active; I just don't believe they all are. In your case how were you notified and what evidence was presented?

I got caught by the average speed cameras on the M5 jct 4 roadworks two weeks a go. 55mph in a 40mph. £100 and 3 points. So yes they work :D
It was late at night coming back from Wales I had set the cruise control to just over 50. My fault totally but I used to have the attitude that they don't work and this proved me very wrong. :)

That drives me mad. Why do so many people fail to observe good lane discipline? When I first started driving (a long time a go - don't ask), the Police would pull people over for it. I rarely see traffic cars any more.

My biggest hate on the roads......no traffic and they sit in the middle or fast lane for miles and get road rage when you end up under taking them or flashing them.

And yes the cameras work, Caught loads last year on the M54 http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/...re-catch-3700-drivers-but-theyre-coming-down/

Northants Police got someone doing 104 in the average-speed 50 zone on the M1 recently!

I know it's not an excuse but I think people would be more likely to obey average speed checks etc... if there were people actually working on the area that needs repair/maintenance etc...

For example, if you come of the M1 at junction 13 and then head east towards the A1 using the A421, there's currently 40mph speed restrictions. This is usually NSL so doing 40mph on there feels like walking but the most annoying thing is, there's no one working there!

never seen a rear facing one but you get plenty of warning as you've got a long time after the first one to get your average down

They are more prevalent in the London area ans construction area I think. Besides around construction areas I'd always slow down especially if there are people working. Frankly I slow down now anyway as it just isn't worth it.

The ones covering roadworks where no-one's working and there's no blocked lanes annoy me greatly.

The A12 between the M25 and Ipswich is the poster boy for this as I don't think I've ever been on that damned road when it didn't have roadworks.

I should hope they have. The amount of people that fly past me when I am sat there at 50mph in an average speed check of 50mph is nuts. Almost makes me think they know something I don't

NIP to my company, and photo for evidence, I didn't ask to see the photo as I knew I'd gone through there well above the speed limit not looking at the speedo at all.
