Awesome idea

I looked into it, have several ideas which aren't catered for, could be sold at a premium due to their nature and the "competion" is crap and charge mega bucks like £15 and do an utterly retarded job. However don't have the 10k+ needed to make such apps, or the nessecary programming skills.

You can do it for less than £10k.

I've done some stuff with guys in Portugal and Lithuania that cost a hell of a lot less than that. I've also worked with a lot of app agencies in the UK that are total garbage.

Obviously there are issues with offshoring, but it depends on clarity of your design and the complexity of the product.

Had a good look round and that's what was being suggested even abroad, they aren't the simplist App map/GPS related, server side database, pulling data from other websites as well as crowd data editing, pictures and videos as well. It's not a mass app for everyone, but its a resonable sized market.

Ah, the integration side is what's going to kill you on the cost front, especially as you'd need multiple skill sets in a delivery team. Having an appreciation of the scale of what's required is the first step.

Look for a partner. There are Angel funding groups that would invest.

Sadly, no one on Android pays for apps anymore and Apple users have no money left after being suckered into buying the latest "new" product, which is remarkably similar to the last. Windows Phone? Hahahah, all 5 of us might buy your app, if you're lucky.

No one on android ever paid for apps or content any way. I've canned native android development teams in two organisations this year as there is no return on investment for the same product as iOS.

HTML5 with a bit of wrapping for notifications and the hardware back button is all that's generally worth doing for android.

Android users are cost conscious by definition, that's why they have android phones. iOS users buy stuff if it's shiny.

Once you've done some initial planning work and worked out how it's going to make money then keeping the idea to yourself is generally a bad idea.

You need to do some market research. That doesn't mean tell everyone on a technical forum about the idea, but do ask your target audience (age, gender etc) if they think it's a good idea. The question "I wish there was an app which..." is a good line of questioning to start off.

It's much better to discover that no one wants your app at the start, rather than discovering months down the line just before it's complete :)

Also, the vast number of ideas do not get stolen if you tell someone about it. Think about how popular Kickstarter is - why isn't every man and his dog ripping off the ideas in there?

[edit] Oh also, you need to do heavy marketting to get noticed in the software market. Remember to send out as many press releases as possible!
