I've heard that BA flights into Heathrow have been cancelled. Does anyone have any idea of how long this will last? I've been working abroad since August, and if I can't get home I will be distinctly upset - meant to be flying on the 22nd...
 
All BA flights are cancelled til 1700. If the weather continues as it is, this is likely to be extended until there is an improvement.

The forecast looks good for the 22nd. There may be some regulations in force due to de-icing issues and freezing fog if it appears but hopefulkly by then it'll be no worse than a bit of a delay. I'm flying out of Heathrow on the 21st and I'm positive about it.

This may be a stupid question but if it snows for, say, a week, will they keep the runways closed, or will they decide to try to deal with it?

Looks like I need to keep my fingers crossed for some good weather...apparently Tuesday and Wednesday are meant to be sunny, but I don't trust any forecast this far in advance :(

If the snow continues like it is doing now, keeping the runways clear will be an issue. Heathrow is currently open and operational, it's only BA that have cancelled all their flights.

Fingers crossed it will be fine :)
 
My Dad was meant to fly to Innsbruck this afternoon to go skiing for Christmas.

BA have told him the best they can do is a flight to Munich on Monday. £600 taxi fair to the resort awaits.

He is not best pleased.
 
probably if it snows for a week they'll deal with the snow and only allow flights if it's safe

one of the the last things an airport wants is not to be able to let planes take off and land so i'm sure they'll do everything in their power to clear the runways
 
i flew out of heathrow yesterday

had to wait 4 hours in the plane for them to remove ice from the wings so we could take off

i think it was one of the last flights to leave , yay. so lucky

not a drop of snow in India :)

They do. I have flown in and out of snowy airports many times.

It's not always severe enough to close airports. Problem is with LHR, LGW, etc is it causes massive delays and cancellations, as the runway is pretty heavily used. Typically once every couple of flights has gone, they have to clear the runway again. This is not such an issue at smaller airports like Bristol, who get maybe 10-12 commercial movements per hour off-peak, as there is generally time to clear any snow.

The other problem is that the aircraft need de-iceing and trying to keep them de- iced and get them off the ground when the runway is clear is a complicated operation.

Remember the taxiways, aprons, etc also need to be kept snow- free, not just the runways.

Where are you in India? That's where I'll be coming home from if the snow stops!
 
My dad was due to be on a BA flight from Miami to Heathrow last night, all canceled - they were EXTREMELY unhelpful to everyone he was telling me. He booked himself on a Virgin Atlantic flight and arrived this morning :)
 
I am currently scheduled to come back to ol Blighty today at around 6 in the afternoon, however I am flying with Saudi Airlines so I genuinely fear for my life at this point, hell these people cant handle rain, what the hell are they going to do with snow.
 
I'm flying out of Heathrow on Wednesday morning to Hkong. The weather forcasts keep changing, anyone know if likelt to be ok? Thanks

I'm flying from Japan on the 22nd

I'm wondering how airlines reschedule people who have missed flights? Do the people who missed their flights on Monday, fly on Tuesday shifting the other flights?:confused:

I'm not sure - I'd assume they put on extra flights but are obviously limited by the airport's capacity, so I imagine there will be delays :(

EDIT: **** it, snow now forecast for Wednesday.

No - the people who missed their flights go to the back of the queue to take any remaining spaces on the next scheduled flights. They won't bump you off your flight for someone who has had an earlier one cancelled ;)
 
My brother is stuck in frankfurt for 2 days now as he was due to fly with BA. However they transferred him to lufthansa and that got cancelled aswell:(.

I don't understand that US and Canada also have more heavy snow in certain parts and yet the airports there seem to be operating normally. Oslo airports seem to be fine even though it snows heavily in norway.Why is it that everytime there is heavy snow or rain in this country, it brings the transport system to a standstill in this country:mad:?
