Hi Everyone,

Isnt this a bit different.

Was wondering if anyone else has had to try and do this and what they actually came up with.

Mine is in the front room hooked upto the HIFI so moving it out of the room is not an option. Sits on the floor beside the TV/HIFI. Moving it into a desk of some sort would also not do.

For now I have cable tied everything to everything else. Serious used about 150 cable ties. The young one has a habbit of picking out a single wire and tugging, biting and banging it off other things.

So a grouped all the wires that were headed towards the TV into one group. This worked as it was no longer easy for her to do anything with a big bunch of wires.

Second thing was to cable tie the digi box leads and the ethernet together and tape down along the skirting. Horah this worked as nothing for her to grab.

1 remaining problem is that she likes flashing lights(power switch) and has turned the thing off once so far but as she gets wiser this could happen again and again any advice as telling her "no" doesnt work and Im getting tired of running to her all the time.

:D

Perhaps you could disconnect the case power button and use a keyboard button-press to power on the PC instead? Presumably it would be easy to keep the keyboard out of reach.

Monitor, keyboard and mouse is out of reach. How would one go about doing that?

A guy at another forum built a PC for a show, where people like to press every button, he disconnected the power switch lead from the mother board so the on/off and reset buttons didnt werk...

i dont know how he turned it on tho, i pretty sure you can get a motherboard with power buttons on it, so the switch isnt needed tho ud have to open the case to turn it on off

failing all that , im sure a fire gaurd or the like would keep the tot away ?

Youve never seen my child she reminds me of the terminator in the 1st film at the end were it has no legs but keeps dragging itself towards ist target, which in this case is my PC Lol.

Firegaurd will probably be the best solution though although really ugly so would be a shame.

In the BIOS setup when you boot your PC you should be able to find a bunch of options which will allow you to modify its power-up. Should be options to boot over a LAN, boot by hot-key, etc. The hot-key boot-up is what you want and you should be able to simply assign a key combination which will start the PC when pressed. I just have to press F1 on my keyboard to boot it up.

Edit: you might also have an option to disable the power button from the BIOS rather than going through the hassle of disconnecting it from the motherboard header.

Something like this?

Good one and only $10

PC Tower Protector does it all.

Prevent costly PC damage. PC Guard is an adjustable durable cover designed to safeguard systems from little programmers. The entire front panel of the tower is covered. This protects DVD/CD draws, power buttons and disc drawers. Improve child safety while protecting valuable computer components.

Features:

* Entire tower front is covered so toddlers cannot see nor push the buttons.
* Black plastic backed nylon with "Velcro" sewn on each "flap".
* Easily removed by adults.
* Dimensions: 16" wide x 16" high. Not square, see picture above left.
* Allow 10 hours for adhesive to set before trying to remove.
* Suggestion: Install when children are not present, i.e. asleep for the night.
* Remember: No protective device takes the place of adult supervision.

If you are happy sticking velcro to your PC then go buy some with some canvas from a DIY/craft shop. At least you should be able to match the colours then :D

Oh come on...just spray it ;)

Daughter and yes. :)

Turn your pc on, right click on the desktop then go to properties then screensaver and go to the power options. Then on one of the tabs(not sure which on Vista right now) you will be able to select what happens when the power button is pressed. Select the option, Do Nothing.

Hmmm. Couple of things my BIOS has no frigin options as its a HELL aghh! But upgrade will be soon July the .....22.

Anyway yeah good idea found those options but then how do I turn the thing on?

Found the options in Vista.

I think he meant turn the PC on, then change the settings. Turning it off will mean using the start menu and then when you do a cold boot, the button should work as normal because the settings are in the OS...i think thats how it works anyway
