Babylon 5 reboot?

Please don't. Everything they reboot, they ruin. They are never going to replace the wonderful actors they had. Just remaster the scenes to upscale and clean them up, re-render the space scenes at a higher resolution, and be done.

CW are paying. I'll have to wait to see it before I'm in. But deep down I know it's dog faeces already.

I guess dunes popularity has corporate people scrabbling for material :p

It'll be hard to see one of my all time favourites reworked but... Crosses every bone in my hands, it compares or doesn't ruin anything.

I dunno, i mean i like the old show and rewatched a lot recently. If they reboot with a clean slate and dont repeat set characters or story arcs and is fresh with new races maybe and b5 is different enough. It could be fun to watch. The cast would have to be good tho and the cgi id hope has a good budget if its to beat the crazy good cgi fights if a little non-hd looking from the past shows.

JMS is behind the reboot,so I am hopeful its fine as he created the series and wrote most of the episodes!

This is a really good website if you want to look at some of the original concepts behind the series:
https://www.b5scrolls.com/

One of the people connected with that website, got hold of the original CGI assets, and re-rendered them on a modern system:

Considering they are 26 years old, they still look pretty decent IMHO. There also seems to be a better master of the original series too on HBO Max:

the current HBO MAX 4:3 ratio partial HD remaster, where the sharping, polish here and there is the best we going to get. As the facility where all the b5 raw footage, cgi data, model etc which was used to create b5 had a fire and sadly nearly all b5 related material was lost, hence no upscale / HD Master of the pilot movie "the gathering" as there nothing to work with to do so. so in order to do a true remaster they would have to recreate all cgi data and model from scratch. that a lot of time and money that they are unwilling to pay.

Some of the original CGI models survived(look at my post),and you can see how much better they look when re-rendered using modern hardware.

yes some cgi did survive, but not enough to redo a series in true HD, it why when they were doing the HD remaster for Itune, amazon, HBO Max they had to go from original widescreen 16:9 ratio which was used in the broadcast on tv and on dvd to 4:3 ratio cause they only had limit material to work with no original master etc. especially on the cgi scene as they only had 4:3 ratio not the 16:9 ratio as that was lost.

just to add from what was reported elsewhere and from what some fans have done so far as some have done 4k upscales that look truly stunning, if there was no fire and they had access to the all the original material they could have easily done a true HD Remaster in 16:9 on par if not better than the what was done For ST:TNG and cheaper but at last we won't get to see that.

The main issue with redoing B5 in better CGI is all thr original film with blue screen used in backgrounds and windows etc and live action was lost. They would never get the money back to do all that again frame by frame.

B5 is my favourite show of all time but I really, really, really don't want them to do this. Sure they can improve on the CGI, even though it was groundbreaking at the time but what they can't reboot are the incredible characters and the amazing actors that gave them so much life - Just NO!

It's the characters that made that show the big 4 were all masterful.
All the supporting cast also well written and fleshed out. Everyone grew.

The CGI was amazing to a young me but an older me appreciates the actors now. I still well up for so many scenes. :P

I see JMS references what they did with the Westworld and Battlestar Galactica reboots, so I take from that that there will probably be some formerly good guys becoming bad guys and vica versa, and probably some major characters will undergo a sex change. My initial reaction was an instant "NOOOO!", but reigning that back in slightly, if it was done with the same skill in the first couple of seasons of Westworld and BSG, where you really did have to abandon any preconceptions of the original series and basically completely reset your expectations, then a B5 reboot could have some merit, so it is not impossible to do, and may end up being seen as a show alongside the original rather than a replacement. Maybe the Vorlons and Shadows will be seen as equally bad from the get go, rather than it eventually leading up to that, with stories going along those lines.

But clearly, if it just basically copies the original story by and large, then it will be a complete waste of time, even if they do shuffle characters around etc. There is no way that would work, since there would be no surprise story arcs. For it to work it would have to deviate from the established arc pretty damn quick, to get any kind of WW/BSG style feeling going on.

Anyway, they could struggle to get actors to sign up for this, since appearing on B5 is pretty much signing your own death sentence if the original is anything to go by.

Just No No No write some original stuff stop being lazy especially when you dont want to tarnish the memory of a great show. I still have the "ding ding you have transmissions holding" as my txt message notification on my phone from their internal comms systems.
