Hi i decided it might be a good idea to start backing up my PC so i am about to but a 1TB External Hard Drive (any suggestions?) and also some software to do it with. I was wondering what the Vista's Computer Back Up is like compared to other Back Up software?#

Also would it be worth waiting for USB 3 before i get a backup drive?

If you are looking to backup your entire PC I'd recommend something like ghost.
You can take a complete image of your whole machine and if your HDD dies, get a new one and restore the whole thing without a need to reinstall Windows and all your apps and games.

Or, if you are just looking to backup certain files and folders then something as basic (and free) as robocopy will suit. It's entirely command line so if you're daunted by that you'd be beter off with a gui driven system.

The thing with the windows back-up is that it backs up your files and maybe settings, it doesnt however backup the windows folders or your programs so id second the one above ^^^^^.

Acronis 2009 is the best in my opinion. It gives you the option to press F10 at boot-time if ur pc doesnt start up; like recentg laptops do. And it has LOADS of backup options. Get the 30day free trial. Trust me, ull love it!

+1

This is by far the best personal backup solution on the market.

If I was buying a backup drive, I would buy one with Gigabit ethernet rather than a 'local' Firewire/USB drive. It's much more reliable if you're not moving it about as much. And the price differential is quite small.

BTW - Congratulations on being smart enough to realise it's good to back up your data. One day you will thank yourself.

I got a 500GB Maxtor hard drive today nothing special since i figured i want need to use it too often (hopefully) =) its usb2.0 so 5Hours to copy everything over lol :P Its going about about 25meg a second does that sound about right ? Because it claims it can to upto 480mb/s. But looking at my HDtune results its proberly just my failing hard drive lol :P

So this .tib file that acronis gives you i can boot from and restore everything on my new HDD right?

No, you have to create the boot CD from within ATI, then you boot from that into ATI in DOS, run the Restore wizard find the backup image on your (other) part/HDD and restore it...

use SyncBackSE

works brilliantly - far superior to any other backup software i've used (and i've tried many). for one, it actually mirrors 100% properly - most other softwares don't detect certain changes on the A side properly.

+1 for Acronis

Don't bother with Norton Ghost

If you want to get a 1tb HDD at the moment I would recommend Samsung Spinpoint F1

i keep all my files that are important/irreplacable on a 1TB harddrive separate from OS and once a month i copy it to an external 1TB by dragging and dropping the contents. Is there any benefit to using one of these copy programs?
