Backup slow

Just wondering I am backing up data from one sata drive (Hitachi 160gb sata) to my new Samsung f2 1.5tb hdd. The average speed is 6 MB/sec. Is this normal?

If you're dealing with a lot of small files then that's about right.

20gb files in total?

The total size is irrelevant when looking at the rate. It's the size of the individual files which will determine how fast they're copied. Each file that's copied means an update to the MFT which means moving the drive head away from where the files are being written. Moving the head takes time hence copying a lot of small files will take longer than fewer large files.
