Scientists in the United States are trying to grow human organs inside pigs.
They have injected human stem cells into pig embryos to produce human-pig embryos known as chimeras.
The embryos are part of research aimed at overcoming the worldwide shortage of transplant organs.

It would be amazing if they could do it. Grow replacement organs to order and also make a nice sandwich at the same time. The implications are pretty astounding.

I thought this thread was going to be about how my future supply of Bacon was being secured with some trick new Bacon Donor invention. :D

Am I alone in finding this incredibly creepy?

How about adding some Grizzly DNA... ManBearPig! :o

it is pretty cool... thought tbh... maybe society being a bit less funny about the whole thing and we could run a robust 'opt out' system for organ donation + have a policy where hospitals simply harvest organs if your identity is confirmed and you're not on the opt out list ought to go a long way to solving the issue

I still don't understand why anyone is off the list. It's not like you need them anymore.

As far as I'm concerned when I'm gone if something is left over you haven't been efficient enough.

Look I'm not saying we need to start worshiping them like the hindus do cows but the odd nice statue, sonnet or carribbiean cruise for or trottered friends might be due as a thank you for thier never ending kindness and duty to the human race

I thought it was going to be a new scam with those white plastic bag charity collections. :D

Just another publicity-hungry academic desperately courting controversy in search of recognition. Won't result in anything useful.

Medical science is progressing at such a rate it's cray cray. Just yesterday someone said about defeating ageing so we can live forever, then there's this, and now we're making hearts and livers made of bacons. It's unbelievable really.
