Bad language at work

I think it depends on the setting. I have people at work who swear all the time, but it's not directed towards someone.

If it was so that a person was using it towards me then I don't think I would have accepted it.

But this has nothing to do with anything else, it's purely about swearing in the workplace.

In fact he stated that it annoyed him more than the fact that he was called into the office for a dressing down to begin with, so I would say it had everything to do with it and could maybe explain why his Boss felt it necessary or was angry enough to resort to swearing at him.

EDIT: It seems that there is more to it than simply his boss having a go at him, in which case his managers behaviour should be dealt with.

I should probably expand, this woman is quite often swearing in the office (not necessarily at anyone but just to exaggerate something etc)... This alone bugs me (it's a small London office, not a betting shop) but with it being directed at me I'm not too happy.

Additionally, we are having several new staff interviewed and she happily slags them off to her close female colleague quite openly in the office.

In this case you need to contact your HR dept or make a formal complaint using your companies grievance procedures.

Unprofessional behaviour such as making derogatory personal comments about the staff she is responsible for is unacceptable, more so than her choice of language. If I was her senior manager I would not be happy at all with that kind of attitude in a manager.

I do swear occasionally at work usually calling someone 'nobber' when they've not done something/correctly. It's usually quietly just to my supervisor said in frustration rather tan out of spite. I do occasionally throw the F word in there in front of it sometimes though I do become very aware that what I've just said isn't very professional.

On the whole though I wouldn't swear in front of anyone at work I wasn't on good terms with.

If you're not happy with management speak to HR. The amount of people that get sent on 'verbal communications' courses because of swearing on site is hilarious.

The last foreman found himself on one after something along the lines of 'If you don't start paying ******* attention I'm going to bend you over and *ahem* you up the ****'.

if someone can't convey themselves without swearing and being aggressive they shouldn't be managing. don't stand for it. hopefully your company is big enough that you have an HR department where you could make a complaint
it's these kind of people that end up bullying and intimidating employees and making life hell for a few

Rather than put up with it, should I have told them to watch their mouth?

Ahahahaha, are you serious. I'd have been rolling around the floor laughing if you came out with that.
You're not ten years old any more. Deal with it.

I wonder if those who are defending it would find it acceptable if your bank clerk started swearing or your hairdresser, or checkout clerk, perhaps an interviewer?

Cool, so seems as though the majority think this is unacceptable - bit annoyed I didn't say something more.

Now unfortunately, the company is run by idiots, so we currently don't have an HR department (There's about 60 people in the office so it's not teeny tiny)... instead we're paying a contractor about £17k a month to provide "HR consultancy" :roll eyes: I've never seen this woman actually DO anything, so christ knows what they're paying her for.

I worked on factories for 33 years so it was quite acceptable but you didn't hear it from women.
When I moved to a new job in 2008 with an office full of women I was gobsmacked at the swearing.
The office I work in now has a total of around 28 people which equals 23 women & 5 men and I've never heard the men swear but I've heard most of the women use the F word.
How times change.

I swear like a trooper around friends, but in a professional situation, I think using bad language is, as you have said, very unprofessional and shows an inability to express ones self in a proper manner.

Probably the poshest sentence i've ever type on these forums right there :p
