Bad manners when posting

OP is right.

The OP should also realise there isnt a hope in hell of having a serious discussion in the OC forums unless its about the best way to OC your CPU.

I've been a member on here for a long time and havent posted that much, but I agree with the guy that opened this thread, most of the time when I post I get flamed, theres allot of arrogant people on this forum that love themselves, but the rest of the community is ok.

The reason I use this forum and no other forum tho is because theres allot of members and allot of views on topics, and I feel like I get most of my questions answered here.

P.S. Oh I'll just add one more thing, to the person that opened this thread.....theres no point wasting your breath, nothing will be done about it and you might aswell ignore people like that online. People talk the way they talk online because they can, if you were face to face, then it would be different, well it would different if they were small and you were massive because you could just chin them, lol, like in real life if someone gets cocky they usually get knocked out by the bigger guy. Thats why most are scared. But online they can say what they want coz size doesnt matter.

This has to be one of the most grown up and civilised forums I visit. In fact it has become my main forum now I am sick of living and breathing cars and car forums and the thick childish idiots that frequent "some of them".
I can be a miserable ******* at times on here but if I say it on here then I'd say it to your face. (I might still get a punch in the face for it, but I am arrogant like that :) )

I cant remember who posted this, but it always brings a little smile to my face.

Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof - and as always, the burden of evidence lies with the claimant, not the audience.

It's a great quote by Mr Sagan but it isn't applicable to all things, particularly if the person positing the claims isn't asking for your belief in them. If they are merely opening up a discussion on the possibilities then it matters less. I've got almost no doubt that I'll regret playing devils advocate for this as I tear my hair out after some claim I find fanciful.

I've thought about posting this for a while but hoped that I wouldn't need to as I know it will be a flame fest for those I speak of.

Why must one group be so arrogant, self-righteous, hostile, patronising and downright rude to people?

Would you care to name names of those you believe to be rude here? For my money there could be fault on both sides although I can understand why both sides may resort to being somewhat less than polite in their discussion of the situation as they see it given what appears to be (or is) the other sides intransigence, whether justified or not.

I may be wrong but I think it was Nitefly. :)

He can't be talking about Evangelion because I've never seen him be rude.
He normally batters posters with his common sense.

It must be really tricky to get inside his sphincter now with so many others vying for a place.

I thought better of you and certain other posters but I was obviously wrong; ah well, I'll not take up any more of your valuable time.

I find this forum very well balanced.

Whilst its very well modded to be able to have a young 16 year old spout his adolescent dreams across the place, its also been given that edge for the older generation to slip their wise but sometimes stubborn views on life.

I have seen many quotes by the heirachy of this forum and they are mainly aimed at the more open minded types who actually have something honest to say. Just goes to show. :)

Of course not. But it's certainly applicable to extraordinary claims.

particularly if the person positing the claims isn't asking for your belief in them. If they are merely opening up a discussion on the possibilities then it matters less.

Except that the people we usually get on this forum repeating extraordinary claims, aren't the sort who simply say "OK, what about this then? Let's sit down and examine it logically and systematically, to see if it's actually true". Sure, they often start with a pretence of objectivity, but the moment you start to expose the holes in the "evidence" presented, they become increasingly irate and defensive.

And why? Because they are, in fact, believers. They are not looking for a discussion; they are looking for affirmation. Try as they might, they can't hide their commitment to the material they are posting. They will deny and resist - even when all denial and resistance is useless - any argument or evidence that runs contrary to their dogma.

Their last resort is as predictable as it is feeble: "Well, I don't necessarily believe this... I just think it's worth watching/reading/thinking about". Which always makes me wonder "OK, so why did you defend it so vehemently and become so aggressive with the people who spent their time refuting it?" And of course, that's the giveaway.

You think that's good manners?

Wise words well spoken.
