Bad manners when posting

Provided that he lubes his finger before it touches my sphincter, I don't have a problem with that.

Bloody Aussies! You're all perverted buggers!

It must be really tricky to get inside his sphincter now with so many others vying for a place.

I thought better of you and certain other posters but I was obviously wrong; ah well, I'll not take up any more of your valuable time.
That does not seem to fit in with your OP about good manners at all.

Of course not. But it's certainly applicable to extraordinary claims.

I also realised after I'd posted that Mr Sagan was most likely just the populariser of the phrase and I made the mistake of attributing it to him. My apologies to the late Marcello Truzzi for the error.

Except that the people we usually get on this forum repeating extraordinary claims, aren't the sort who simply say "OK, what about this then? Let's sit down and examine it logically and systematically, to see if it's actually true". Sure, they often start with a pretence of objectivity, but the moment you start to expose the holes in the "evidence" presented, they become increasingly irate and defensive.

And why? Because they are, in fact, believers. They are not looking for a discussion; they are looking for affirmation. Try as they might, they can't hide their commitment to the material they are posting. They will deny and resist - even when all denial and resistance is useless - any argument or evidence that runs contrary to their dogma.

Their last resort is as predictable as it is feeble: "Well, I don't necessarily believe this... I just think it's worth watching/reading/thinking about". Which always makes me wonder "OK, so why did you defend it so vehemently and become so aggressive with the people who spent their time refuting it?" And of course, that's the giveaway.

I can only agree that it is frustrating when people refuse to follow an obvious logical chain of reasoning, if you provide them with facts and they ignore or refute them blindly it certainly makes me wonder how worthwhile maintaining the discussion is but I must have a vague masochistic streak in that I'll frequently carry on.

My problem isn't with genuine ignorance, it is with the deliberate ignorance that some people display when presented with evidence yet they will still postulate their views regardless of it being unsupportable. There are billions of things that I don't know (and probably an equal number that I simply don't care to know) but when given the opportunity to expand my knowledge I will usually at least try to do so or failing that I shouldn't press my views any further.

If you are going to make such big claims then you are going have to provide a sauce per thread where Evangelion has been rude or offensive to another poster.
I have never seen it because he always constructs his posts extremely well.
I on the other hand have been rude and so have others but Evangelion - no.

So Mr Singist lets all try your method for a while -

Magick and his followers post a thread about the latest CT and we all post 'Oh yeah'.

+1

So, from this thread, I'm assuming that we're just complaining about Alien conspiracy wack job opinions?

To be honest, although I find those views annoying, I usually just ignore them here on OcUK. There are some good Youtube videos of this 2012 stuff out there to laugh at but I got bored trolling them after about five minutes.

Believing in alien conspiracy nonsense is irritating but its also pretty harmless. I can think of many more socially acceptable ignorant views which many people hold and regard as okay.

Majick can post pretty sensible non-alien related replies to general subjects I find.

It's all CT stuff the OP is on about.
He wants somebody to start a CT thread and then none of us question it.

Questioning is fine but I'd rather ignore it. It doesn't deserve the publicity or interest that it gets.

I can't be bothered usually to debate about whether aliens are real and living on Earth or something.

Seriously, I mean, its so inane what is the point?

Personally I think this thread is the height of bad manners rather than the conduct of the poster being discussed. I've RTM'd the thread, as regardless of whether I think Evangelion is "right" or "wrong" I don't think these sort of threads aimed at one poster in particular are terribly appropriate, but as nothing has happened it would appear the moderators generally agree with the OP.

Shame :(

Some is CT stuff, some is not but once someone has been labelled a 'nut job' for daring to post something contentious, they tend to get the same sort of insults and derision in other threads.

As regards questioning stuff:
Question the point of view/debate what is presented in the videos etc by all means; I was trying to point out that anyone who posts these sort of links usually gets treated to a barrage of gratuitous abuse/insults by some and thinly veiled distain and supercilious arrogance from Evangelion.

I understand the frustration, especially when someone discovers a site/video for the first time that many of us have seen before but just treating people in the way descibed only serves to demonstrate how intolerant people are.

As I said, if things didn't become so entrenched, we may well discover that some of the 'facts' that we believe are moot points (both sides) and that some joint research would maybe uncover something close to the truth.

Perhaps because you are not interested in such things and I am.
I would love to believe in Aliens but up to yet I've not seen one shred of evidence.
I'd love to believe that Bush destroyed the Twin Towers & Pentagon but I've seen no evidence.
And so on.
