Bahrain Grand Prix 2010, Sakhir - Race 1/19

For all the stick ferrari stand in's took last year for not getting upto pace the great MS was miles away from his team mate who is also in a new team.

Then again it's getting on for 20 years since MS ran a car without traction control :D

Poor old rosbergs car will be resprayed with lead by the next race.

Oh come on. MS is off the ulimate pace there by a reasonable margin but it's nothing like the dire performance that the Massa stand-ins put together. Badoer was 2.6 seconds slower than Kimi in his first qualifying show, and 1.4 seconds slower in his second. Fisichella wasn't quite that dire but still qualified a great many places behind Kimi.

I wasn't aware that 0.463sec (Free 1) and 0.494sec (Free 2) qualified as "miles away"....;)

Didn't think he did too badly myself.

Its miles away if you add it up over a race distance ;)

He was a long way off Rosberg, by a shocking amount.

Schumi is better over race distance anyway

He's never been shabby on single lap efforts either but from MS's own words he clearly knows the pace he was behind rosberg was in a similar set up.

The difference this time is both drivers are new to the team, Rosberg is showing nearly half a second up on MS with as little time in the car as MS. That is not the same as joining a team with a driver thats had 2 or 3 years in the team.

MS will up his game 'for sure'

Pretty sure Rosberg has done well at Bahrain in recent years, think he's been quoted as saying it is one of his favourite tracks. Can't remember when Bahrain was introduced so I'm not sure if MS has previous experience, but NR certainly has more experience around the track.

Doubt MS has lost pace tbh, he was normally ahead of NR during testing. Might be a bit rusty setting up his car on a new track, plus the cars need to be setup differently now (which admittedly is the same for everyone).

Schumacher has been here three times before, winning once (the first event, in '04). Rosberg has been here four times before, with a best finish of 7th (his first year in the sport, and his first F1 race incidentally).

Considering he's been away for so long, I'm sure he'll be fairly pleased with 3rd. I wouldn't take the practice times too seriously though, how many times was Rosberg fastest last year in practice..

The big difference is that MS has had those testing miles. Frankly I think the disadvantage on going to a new team is hugely overstated. There's plenty of drivers who've stepped into a new team and stepped up to the plate. I could forgive Fisi not showing his best hand in the first race in the Ferrari but he should have got over any new team problems after a couple of races. He was still way, way behind Kimi.

F1 experts disagree. Infact I didn't even know Red Bull paid mclaren for the steering wheel technology so that DC didn't have to relearn systems.

The BBC interview which discusses the diadvantage in joining a new team is worth a watch.

Yes in the past new drivers have joined and made an instant impact, Like JV in 96 or even Montoya when he joined. The difference is you don't get anything like the car time in testing as those drivers or any driver had previously.

The BBC interview discusses what a disadvantage it is joining a team where your team mate has bedded in. In a way MS is lucky he is doing his learning in a car with an new team mate rather than an established driver in the team.

Rosberg has always seemed a bit inconsistent, maybe he can rise to this challenge.

Yep. MS is exactly where I expected him to be. Even in his prime, he never went faster than he had to go (unlike drivers like Senna, Mansell, Hamilton - who go fast, just to prove they are fast).

When it counts (in qualifying), I fully expect him to go all out. If at this point MS is still off the pace, then I think MS should be worried.

My own personal take is that MS will not be good enough to compete against the likes of Alonson, Hamilton or Vettel, if they were all in equal cars. MS has had his time and being 3 years out of a car does take its toll.

In saying all of the above, I expect him to finish up with more points than Rosberg.

I was coming back home from work today and saw the headlines on newspapers stating that Button had finished ahead of Hamilton. I was very very surprised and was thinking about JRS's prediction that Button will beat Hamilton over the season. I of course, disagree.

Needless to say, I was relieved to see that in 2nd practise, Hamilton had outdone Button.

Tomorrow's qualifying should be fun and the race will be FANTASTIC!!! I can't wait.

Managed to get the 1st hour and abit of 1st practice in before work and im really looking forward to the race. Going to miss qually sadly so hoping that they will be re-running it on red button like they did last season.

I do get the feeling that Bob Bell had a huge serving of sour grapes for breakfast, who cares about the spirit of the rules? At the end of the day all the teams are there to win. I personally dont think that attempting to fix a race is in the spirit of the rules, nor is having data of another team but what do I know. More likely bitter over the mass damper ruling afew seasons back.

Nice to see HRT that 1 second ahead of Lotus & Virgin they predicted :D

I was also musing at work over the current tyre rules regarding qualifying. As I understand it all the top 10 have to start the race on the tyre the ended qualifying? With the advantage of low fuel whats to stop anyone going out and setting a blistering time say half way into the session, coming in to change tyres then going out to do 1 lap (in/out) and parking up ending the session on effectivly a new set of tyres? To me it would be ideal, set a quick lap on low fuel with soft tyres and then pitting for the harder compound tyres which would last better at the start with a heavy car.

Sporting regulations, article 25.4
25.4 d) At the start of the race each car which took part in Q3 must be fitted with the tyres with which the driver set his grid time.

Had me wondering for a moment.

Anyone know any higher res versions or similar to this. Think it would be a great desktop
