So Hamilton was 2 tenths down on his first Q3 lap in the middle sector but only finished 2 hundredths behind Bottas… If he'd hooked it up his lap time would have been epic.

Sets us up for an interesting race tomorrow. :)

It a 5 hundredths. I wouldn't call it well up, but yeah he blew the second sector.
that was 5 hundredths up on the best sector time, which wasn't hamiltons, but bottas'.
hamilton got provisional pole due to the last sector. in the lap he messed up he was fastest in the first sector for the first time.

Can Bottas be penalised for not putting the wheel back on the car, or the safety device? He dumped them both on the bonnet.

True but wasn't Bottas up 0.09 on his own time as well and only lost 0.06 in the next 2 sectors. So Hamilton still would have needed to pretty much match his sector times from the first lap. That may not be doable if he put more of the tyres into the first sector.

So Vandoorne took a 2nd ice/mgu-k and a third mgu-h and turbo, while Alonso was surprisingly on his first engine before qualifying when his engine blew, so he'll probably be on a 2nd of everything for the race tomorrow. I can see both taking penalties by maybe the 6th race.

no as bottas had already set that, so hamiltons time was faster than bottas new time.
if hamilton had kept it together he likely would have smashed the laptime. But he didnt and it was still a great lap by bottas.

I don't think that is how the deltas work. They refer to the sector time of fastest lap time and not fastest set sector time.

So Hamilton wasn't 0.05 faster than Bottas's new sector 1 time, but his first one.

Funny how a potential driver who was with Williams leaves them to go onto the winning path.

Jenson... Rosberg... Bottas...

What's the bets Alonso leaves Jenson with an Engine Change penalty for Monaco ?

I think engine rules are driver specific?

If they weren't you could "swap" drivers within a team to even up the engine failures between the 2 normal drivers.

Points would still tally up as normal for each driver.

Engines go with the car not the driver iirc. If the driver is out, his replacement has his engines status. That's what happened with Verstappen and Kvyat. They got the each others engine allocations.

F1 Sporting Regulations 2017
Article 23.3f - If a driver is replaced at any time during the Championship season his replacement will be deemed to be the original driver for the purposes of assessing power unit usage.

A Bottas win and a high place (ideally second) for Vettel would be really interesting. If the Mercedes drivers are not dominant but start to split points then Vettel will be laughing, especially now Kimi's off the pace.

The fact that Mercedes are so far clear of everyone will be giving Vettel nightmares.

This track, historically (oxymoron), and the 30c track temperature was meant to be a Ferrari strength, yet the gap is the biggest we've seen yet and Ferrari are showing terrible reliability to boot.

This has to be a blip for Ferrari as otherwise this form is 1-2 pace as it has been for the past 3 seasons.

Ferrari's reliability (and the Merc qualifying pace) has to be a concern, but I don't think at all that we can write this season off just yet. There's huge scope for aero development with these new cars, and there's also limited scope for engine development too.

Describing Ferrari's reliability as terrible is overly dramatic at the moment.

I think people are forgetting that Merc always seem to "turn the engine up" more than anyone in quali, with their special engine maps.

Race pace I expect Vettel to be nipping at the heels of Hamilton. Regarding the win, the major difference is that Vettel now has 2 mercs to pass whereas so far this season he's only had 1 to worry about on lap 1.

Realistically he needs a lightning start to jump Hamilton and he'll be fighting for the win. Likewise for Hamilton, I feel he will need to jump Bottas or he'll find himself vulnerable to Vettel on the long runs.
