As I said, trying to attack from behind on fresher tyres just won't do it. You'll be stuck in the dirty air for eternity and it'll wreck your tyres.
Being blunt though, 99 times out of 100 it will do it. Easy DRS passes had been happening all race long. What we just saw was special from Lewis and arguably Max also overplayed his hand and was impatient with his attempt.

I have a feeling if the roles were reversed Lewis would have waited an extra lap and nailed the overtake

Some excellent early midfield scrapping and an superb finish to the race. Even the wife sat down and watched it and that's saying something!

Some excellent pretty standard early midfield scrapping and an superb incredibly predictable finish to the race.

FTFY.

It was an alright race. The track sucks for genuine action so nearly all of it had to come from DRS. And the cars are too long and too heavy to be remotely spectacular. But at least Tsunoda entertained once or twice, and Hamilton drove well to make the most of a better Merc pit strategy.

Well that won't be changing for many many years if ever.

Lewis Hamilton is the second driver – after Michael Schumacher – to have won a Grand Prix in fifteen different seasons. He also equals Schumacher’s record of wins in 15 consecutive years and the only F1 driver to have won a race in every season he’s competed in.

Says it all really.

Yes, Hamilton's had experience of that, and (IIRC) arguably lost a WDC to Kimi after having to give a place back after a dodgy overtake.

Hamilton wouldn't have knowingly put himself in a position where he would be obligated to give back a position, he would have waited until he could make the move stick with no possible comeback from race control. I think Verstappen was trying to be clever and pull a fast one so he could get away with an illegal overtake and still win the race. Instead he put himself in the position of wasting half the laps he had to get past, and gave Hamilton the chance to recover from his mistake and hold on to first place.

Verstappen still seems to be too aggressive, and doesn't think ahead. He'll always take the risky overtake now, rather than the sure overtake a little later, and he often loses out because he's throwing the dice instead of being in control of the outcome.

I feel like this race will be used in the future to show how good Hamilton was. Especially if (when) Max goes on to win multiple WDC.

Really enjoyable race. Hope each one is as entertaining at least.

Huh?

The dodgy* overtake, if it's the one I'm thinking of, was Spa 2008. Hamilton lost the 2007 championship by failing to score points in China.

* - it wasn't mega-dodgy, of course. And that sense of grievance over it to this day clearly bubbles just beneath the surface of every Hamilton fan even after all this time and all those titles! :p

Max went too early in my view. Bit too keen.

Good race overall. It was RBR's race to lose and they did. Great drive by Hamilton - if the roles were reversed he likely wouldn't have gone too early and in that small margin is where champions live.

I hope that RBR can continue to take the fight to Mercedes and this will be a great learning experience for Max. He's still a bit impatient in my view and he needs to rein it in a bit.

But I agree with others, Max and Lewis are in a league of their own. Although Alonso in either car would be fun!

Hopefully Verstappen is able to compete like that over the course of the season, other than that it was a fairly dull race.

Vettel should have retired end of last season while his fans could still (barely) argue he is a top driver, "he's fed up with F1" won't work now or he wouldn't have signed with such a poor team which is only likely to expose how bad he is in the heat of battle. Also he comes across as insane the way he always blames the other driver when it's blatantly his fault.

Personally I did subscribe to the idea that Ferrari weren't giving him equal treatment as Leclerc. However given this weekend and his lack of performance against Stroll, his rookie mistake against Ocon which would have made even Mazepin blush and then trying to arrogantly claim Ocon moved under braking, I think he's actually past it. I can see a 2002-Hakkinen-esque year of lacklustre performances before announcing mid-season that he's going to retire.

I'm obviously not a fan of Vettel but IMO the only thing he has lost is a car that puts him miles out in front (Red Bull years) and the blue flags that comes with it. I'd subscribe to the argument that if a more complete driver like Verstappen had been at Ferrari over the last 5 years they'd have won 2-3 titles.
