Put proper gravel traps back, then you will not need kerbs, at all a wheel over the white line and into the gravel.

There are also concerns about gravel traps that have led to their removal. I wonder whether they could put a, say, 1m wide strip of grass or gravel next to the track and have the broader run-offs beyond. Enough to punish a driver for dropping a foot over but no more than that. This race was a lot better than last season for staying on track so I hope that things will have improved this season.

The new regime seems more sensible: last season half the track was fair game but drop a wheel over on the wrong corner and your quali lap gets deleted but yesterday we saw Pérez go over on the final corner but as he clearly lost time as he struggled to control the car and that was the only reason he went over there was no penalty (at least I assume that was the reasoning).

I've been thinking about Merc's engine. I wonder whether they've repackaged it for their sidepodless design and then surprised the other teams with the new layout. Could it be that the customer teams were all struggling with cooling and had to run the engine turned down to avoid overheating?

So what do people think about the aero, reckon it made for easier following?

Massively. Unfortunately we still had DRS so overtaking was still all about that rather than pure driving.

Isn't it a historical band aid for when the cars couldn't follow closely to pass and as such it was introduced to alleviate that? Then it kind of stuck around... It looked really powerful when Max was trying to get Charles at the end of the pit straight but i can't help thinking that Charles was saving his battery for the second DRS zone where he kept taking first place back.

In an interview, Charles said he was letting him past on the first knowing he could get him in the second while letting his battery recharge so he could use it to gap Max once he was past.

Wasn't that only because of the safety car though (ie he got lucky in terms of pitting etc)?

Both Alfas were looking good prior to the SC, they looked like they could two stop it quite comfortably and might even have made up more places because some of the others had to pit for fresh tyres. Bottas was 8th, Zhou was 9th before the SC. Bottas kept his place, Zhou fell to 13th, and then they were promoted due to the RB's failing, and Zhou made it past Mick who hadn't stopped for fresh tyres.

They really need to bring the cool down room back now. These chats between drivers are a lot more interesting than just standard driver interviews.

Agreed. The drivers show a lot of respect for each other in these informal moments.

Surely to be consistent, they should delete the time regardless of whether or not he went quicker. Take away the potential for grey area and arguments...

The rule is and, AFAIA, always has been "leaving the track and gaining an advantage". Double penalising a driver who has already lost time through a mistake or lock-up makes no sense but they seem to be taking your approach in Quali anyway.

The only time you see their true colours is when they are stressed and something is on the line.

I don't agree you see people's "true colours" at these times; all you see is that they're stressed.
