Baldurs Gate - Steam & New Version Thread

My mate and I are doing a epic playthrough of all the BG games, not in anticipation of this new edition or anything just something we've planned for a while.

Whats a good class for a newbie? I literally have no clue and was just going to roll a ranger...backup my mate who has experience with the games. Also I found a widescreen mod, is there any issues with using this for multiplayer?

Thanks.

Paladin is a good class for noobs. Pretty much a fighter with a few cleric spells although you have to be lawful good. You will also get an awesome sword in bg2 that only Paladins can use. Mages are more complicated but much more powerful.

I want to put this here so I can quote myself on release. They are going to huff it up royally.

"remain true to the spirit of the game" -- translated: "we're putting in flame-throwers and jump jets. wizards are being replaced with a playable race of vampire sparkle dragons."

"re-forged ... with a variety of modern improvements" -- translated: "we're changing everything. the bits you didn't like? gone. the bits that made you weep with joy? gone too. but we now have sparkle vampire dragons..."

BG needed a HD update. Nothing else.

But now it's got a new team of people all interested in changing it to fit a modern audience.

/sigh. It's going to be another Dragon Age (II)

The signs are pretty good so far actually :)

@Abriael We're going to stay with the BG model of only voicing some of the content. We feel it allows for more in-depth writing.

@TheBobHatter We're using the latest code from BGII Thronw of Bhall as our base, so everything in BG II and ToB will be there + what we add

@DiogoOrtigoso #bgee is 2nd Edition D&D. Our first rule is don't break the fun. Part of the appeal of BG was the depth of the rules system

Here's hoping they stay true to their word!

Best to play a fighter or paladin class on your first playthrough, there are plenty of wizard, cleric and thief NPCs available in the game.

Remember to install Baldurs Gate Trilogy or Tutu to get the first game running on the seconds engine.

After you play through the game a few times and learn where everything is, it can be easily soloed with wizard class splashed with thief, fighter or multiclassed cleric, (probably just watchers keep in the second game cant be soloed), but playing a pure wizard of any kind for your main character is a no no.

But you want to play with the NPCs your first few times for the story and interactions.

I've gone through two solo runs of the game with an Illusionist / Cleric Gnome, and Swashbuckler / Wizard Human now, but get bored well before the end :(

I'll add my support for a fighter class, I always preferred warriors to paladins. Two handed swords and bow and arrows. In BG2 it's better to be a mage though.

One thing I guess they'll change is the character creation process, I spent far too much time re-rolling in BG1 to get the max stats ;)

hmm nice! - looking forward to playing BG2 again ... cant remember if I ever finished bg1 ... I dont think I ever did the expansion of BG2 thou ... was a awesome game.

Aye, I got to Baldurs Gate city in the first one and had multi-quest paralysis: I really missed having a journal in BG1. Still got my saves but not played for years.

I need to just do the main quests and then move to BG2. With the Widescreen mod and unofficial fixes, the original BG2 looks pretty good to be honest. It's no 10 foot interface though :)

Would be interesting to see, if this was mega successful, if other developers would follow and update their old ip's purely cosmetically, e.g. a proper Syndicate, other favourite classic.

Personally, Atari are a horrible company in terms of what they do with games and studios. Case in point being TDU2, Eden interactive were treated like **** by Atari, hence why the product was universally acclaimed to be pants.

The devs may want to go in one direction but wait untill the CEO's snotty 12 year old plays a daily build and goes "WHOA, NO GUNS, THIS STINKS".

You need to look at owns the IP to these titles.

Syndicate being in the hands of E.A, I see them doing no good with it. They are officially on par now with Activision in my opinion.

2d iso :)

@PeterGodsic If by today's graphics standards you mean lots of 3D rendering, no. We're 2D isometric all the way

And on Atari, I haven't seen anything about their involvement yet, it'd be nice to hear what the devs have to say about it (but I doubt we will!).

'tis very strange to see my top two PC games of all time currently be rehashed. Never thought something like this could happen.

I suppose I should be delighted, but the tired cynic in me knows that PC gaming has changed rather a lot since the days of yore and I fear what modern devs will do to them. The words console, modern audience and streamling fill me with dread.

I'm already polishing my axe in expectation of an angry visit to the X-Com boys at Firaxis, if Overhaul mess this one up, I'll be going for the eyes.

It's been a very surprising year for PC gaming in general, with Firaxis doing a very promising X-Com remake, the Planetside remake, and now this. Nice to see devs start to think outside the box a bit on what they reckon will sell.

EA will copy anything that makes money, so I assume they would consider the option if this enhanced Baldur's Gate proves lucrative.

If EA did it would be interesting to know if sales figure would exceed their FPS reboot.

Only used EA as an example, as it might be the start of a trend for other publishers who wish to get another bite of the apple.

I was planning on installing BGT and having a complete run through as I only ever got a third of the way through the first one (have finished BG2 tho), I think I'll hold off now and wait for these enhanced versions! Would be nice if they picked Planescape Torment for the some enhancement treatment as well if they're able to get hold of the licence.
